Beefing up Differentials.. Any ideas?
hmm.. I beefed up the dif's in the MT yesterday.... One thing that I noticed it lacked was that the differential gears in it, when I took it apart is the two smaller gears didn't have a spring between them to push them against the outer gears inside the differential. It's a trick I took from I think either the Ofna dominator or megaforce.. or something.. I filled it with SAE-30 oil. just to give it fluid to keep it somewhat in good condition. I'll report back to how it is doing. I know people filling it up with like high weight oil.. = grease... stuff.. but I think once the gears are churning.. there would be just a little area by the gears being used up. so we'll see how the oil setup goes.
when I turn the wheels it seems like they have a better grip inside the diff's... I'll keep you posted on how well it goes..

Bah!.. I should have specified... it's a stadium truck.. HPI Nitro MT... dang it! I realized that HPI shouldn't have called it a MT.. blargh..but if anyone got any ideas for making the differentials stronger.. I'm all ears
Beef.. that's what's for dinner..
I mean.. come on.. you don't go.. mmmmmmm.. I'm manly... I want a chicken breast.... you go.. I want a big steak!

Over here in the UK, the beef don't taste the same. So I tend to eat more chicken or pork.
As for your truck, the HPI MT is a stadium truck? I thought ST's were only 2 wheel drive?

nope.. not the HPI Nitro MT's... Duratrax Overdrive ST I think is also 4wd.... The other one is the Kyosho Tr-15 Monster Touring Car... 4wd... I want the kyosho tr-15.. but they aren't that available.. not alot of people have that... sorta rare.. The Nitro MT is pretty much based on the RS4 3 concept... or it's the other way around.. I forget..

ok.. filling the differential itself .. by taking off the four screws helped.. but filling the plastic housing with oil was a bad idea.. it leaked all over the place... well the rear one.. the front one didn't leak at all.. so may be the housing is just broken.. but it did have much better 4 wheel drive.

the HPI truck has sealed diffs?? I thought they were roughly the same as my SS, which are not sealed, and I would never put oil into.

RE: Beefing up Differentials.. Any ideas?
ive a hpi nitro rush and and have gone through 3 sets of diff gears.
the edges of the gears wear and so slip
i had so many wrecked spares i decided to make a sacrificial diff
i just put the best old trashed gears in the diff but
put an extra wafer thin washer on each side of the diff
so that the gears meshed closer together
since, ive been doing very lengthy tight donuts on concrete and dirt with a much more powerful engine and have had no trouble, the previously trashed gears have lasted longer than new ones did just because i added one washer to each side
so i suggest doing this as the gears mesh so much better
i tried adding 2 more washers to each side but this was too tight
(you get a set of washers when you buy a new set of diff gears)

studysession: Don't worry about the beef tasting different, that's just the mad cow disease. Gives it an interesting twang, doesn't it

So washers to space out the gears...the two small gears on that shaft?... is that what you all are talking about? I put a spring between them to push them apart.... bad idea?

the washers are wafer thin and fit between gears attached to cups, ie the slightly bigger ones.there should be one there alwready on each side but it may be hidden by grease.they fit directly behind the gear and are supposed to reduce friction i think, but by adding an extra one to each side the gears mesh that bit better and it makes a big difference in diff life. id remove the spring as it would reduce mesh.
(i hope the very inside of your diff is similar to a rush diff)

sorry i didnt mean to say
"between"gears attatched to cups the are behind gear, between gear and diff casing and so squeeze the diff gears closer together.
i hope that clarifies
