Default Decals and Dope

I am finishing a TF Elder with Koverall and dope. After covering, I sprayed two coats of nitrate, two coats of color, and now I am ready to put down the two coats of butyrate. I am using a HVLP gravity feed detail gun.

Has anyone put their decals down before spraying on the butyrate layers? I have read some posts that the decals do not stick well to the dope finish. These are the decals in the kit, the are peel off, not water slide. I will conduct a test to make sure the dope does not disolve the decal material.

Any previous experience appreciated.

I've never had problems getting decals to adhere to dope. The problem is sealing the decals afterward. If you put dope over decals it will eat them.

I've used other types of clear coat which worked well (Chevron clear, etc.) but there's a problem with that too. Specifically, if you have to repair the covering, then the dope will react with the clear coat and make it bubble.

I'm not sure what the answer is other than to paint the markings with dope or live with difficult repairs.

Thanks for the info............ I was afraid that the dope would eat the decals. I will just try and get them to stick without any overcoat.

Just to clarify - it's really not a problem getting the decals to stick to a doped surface. The problem is making them fuel/handling proof. Waterslide decals tend to become brittle fairly soon, so you will want to coat them with something to keep them from chipping off.
