Default K170 F Flames on Start

Hi Barry.

I'm using a K170 F, really love my turbine!
Just a query, all starts during OVER SWITCH stage I have enough fire in the exhaust cone, which then disappears after a few seconds when the turbine starts to increase RPM.

I think, I have too much fuel in the previous stage.
The parameters are identical to shipped by default.

What would you recommend modifying parameter to avoid the fire?
Thank you very much!

Best regards,

Maxi

You are right Maxi, the preheat fuel may be dialed down a bit, but more importantly make sure your Min Flow is at least 80%, let us know how this goes.

Beat me to it, I was going to suggest the same thing. My 170 was doing this at first as well, after that small adjustment things went like clockwork.

Barry thank you very much for your help.
I'll try next weekend and then tell them if it works better.

i got a Kingtech 170E i believe. Its kero start.

I decided to reset the START parameters as I wanted to start fresh but I cant get the engine to start.

I see the fuel going into the engine and it starts the starting cycle but it doesn't transition. After two minutes of start attempts I noticed fuel coming out of the rear so I stopped the start sequence to avoid a fire. What could be the issue?

PS. The reason why i reset the parameters was because the engine was too rich and caused flames on start up and also because that was set up by someone else.

Start Parameters are as follows;

Pump Start Point- Auto +2
Pump Start Ramp- 5
Glow plug Power- 7.3V
Low Batt Volts- 6.0V
Start Power at Ignition- 70
Starter Power at Fuel Ramp- 180
RPM 100% starter Power- 15000
RPM OFF starter- 19000
RPM to Reconnect starter- 18000
RPM Ignition K.- 2000
Pump PW Ignition k.- 23
Engine Min Flow- 80%
EGT End Preheat- 72C
RPM Preheat- 5000
RPM Fuel RAMP- 10000
Preheat Fuel- 28%
Ignition Time out- 27s
Start Mode- auto kero

RUN parameters are;

Full Power- 123,000
Idle Speed- 35,000
Stop speed- 20,000RPM
Start/Min temp- 100C
Max temp- 848C
Acceleration delay- 008
Deceleration delay- 006
stability delay- 100
pump limit- 0640

Do you get any rise in temp? could be too much fuel at the preheat and its not lighting and cooling it off. Try messing with the pre heat some, im sure Barry will jump in here.

I paid more attention to the fuel lines to get an idea of how much fuel was going in the engine as i was afraid of a wet start. I did see the fuel come out the back but luckily it never started, but if i remember correctly, the rpm i noticed was 5000 and the temp didn't go above 50 and it just sustained there for a good two minutes until i shut down starting mode.

It would be nice if whomever may already have this engine dialed in if they could list every single input and i could just transfer that into my set up and be done with tweaking; specifically that i'm new to turbines and this is my first.

The fact that i will be using this engine on a ultraflash it scares me even think that wont be able to see the engine as i start it.

Original settings that i had in the engine before I changed them to factory settings. Here is a video of the start up with these settings. The problem with these settings is after shutting down, I would noticed a puddle of fuel on the bypass which would cause a wet start on the next start up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIaPIgUjycU

FACTORY SETTINGS
Pump Start Point- Auto +2
Pump Start Ramp- 5
Glow plug Power- 7.3V
Low Batt Volts- 6.0V
Start Power at Ignition- 70
Starter Power at Fuel Ramp- 180
RPM 100% starter Power- 15000
RPM OFF starter- 19000
RPM to Reconnect starter- 18000
RPM Ignition K.- 2000
Pump PW Ignition k.- 23
Engine Min Flow- 80%
EGT End Preheat- 72C
RPM Preheat- 5000
RPM Fuel RAMP- 10000
Preheat Fuel- 28%
Ignition Time out- 27s
Start Mode- auto kero

ORIGINAL SETTINGS BEFORE SWITCHING TO FACTORY AND IT WONT START.
Pump Start Point- Auto +2

Pump Start Ramp- 6
Glow plug Power- 7.5V
Low Batt Volts- 6.0V
Start Power at Ignition- 100
Starter Power at Fuel Ramp- 140
RPM 100% starter Power- 25000
RPM OFF starter- 22000
RPM to Reconnect starter- 19000
RPM Ignition K.- 3000
Pump PW Ignition k.- 040
Engine Min Flow- 55%
EGT End Preheat- 0120c
RPM Preheat- 5000
RPM Fuel RAMP- 6000
Preheat Fuel- 55%
Ignition Time out- 27s
Start Mode- auto kero

Here are my K-170 start parameters:

START SETTINGS
Pump Start Point- Auto +2
Pump Start Ramp- 6
Glow plug Power- 7.4V
Low Batt Volts- 7.0V
Start Power at Ignition- 150
Starter Power at Fuel Ramp- 160
RPM 100% starter Power- 16000
RPM OFF starter- 19000
RPM to Reconnect starter- 18000
RPM Ignition K.- 3000
Pump PW Ignition k.- 17
Engine Min Flow- 30%
EGT End Preheat- 100C
RPM Preheat- 5000
RPM Fuel RAMP- 6000
Preheat Fuel- 30%
Ignition Time out- 27s
Start Mode- auto kero

I do get some flames during startup (but not too concerning). I do wish someone can provide specific advice (not just lower x or raise y ; we need to know approximately how much) on how to eliminate the startup flames entirely. Also, it is very frustrating reading this forum (in other posts) when someone posts a problem and the next thing you see is that person thanking Kingtech for advice on how they fixed the problem, but no specifics as to what they were told to do to remedy the issue.

Good luck with yours.

Nick

Nick,

I shared the same concerns and frustration about the forums. What I did was I emailed Dirk with kingtech and he truly went out of his way to help me out.

I can help you sets yours up the same way he did with me by changing just about every setting.

So email me your number at [email protected] and I'll give you call later on tonight or tomorrow when I get home.

Or or you could just contact dirk yourself and he will of course help you out.

Nick every set up is different. It depends on your fuel tanks vents UAT and other restrictions in the system. Please give Dirk or Barry a call that's the best way to get her starting right.
