Kyosho P51 Mustang ARF E conversion
I am currently in the process of ordering a Kyosho P51 Mustang ARF, I want to covert it to electric, I seemed to be overwhelmed by different motors and gear boxes, I am not sure what is the right kind to get. I am familiar with Hacker motors and Lithium batteries. But I am not sure of a good Motor\Gear box combo, I was thinking about a MEC 4:1 Superbox gearbox and a Hacker motor B40 or B50 something.

the P51 is quite a big bird, would probably need a B50 to fly good.
I would recomend the Maxon gearboxes thet comes factory mounted, they run very smooth!
something like a B50 10L 6,7:1 swinging a 15x10 on 6s li-pos would be my guess.
would be around 45-ish amps (some one with motocalc or Ecalc please correct me )

Hey Henke Torphamar, the P51 is not that big, the specs on it are,
Wingspan: 54.7" (1390mm)
Wing Area: 527 sq in (34 sq dm)
Fuselage Length: 47.6" (1210mm)
Weight approx 5.5 to 5.8 lb (2550-2650 g)
Wing Loading: 26 oz/sq ft (80 g/sq dm)
It was recomended by another forum member to go with a

The MaxCim system you suggest will definitely fly your P-51.
I'm using a very similar system in my 9lb, Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan on 25 cells. My review should be posted on RCU soon.

No offense to the guys, as I know Tom makes good stuff and Greg knows his stuff, but you're wedging a .60-size powerplant into a .40-size plane. The result is going to be an overweight, not-fun-to-fly plane. 8 pounds is too much for that size plane, IMHO. 22 cells is too much for that plane, IMHO, especially big RC2400s.
Greg's AT-6 is a much larger plane for the 9lbs it weighs.
Check out my F4U Corsair conversion. It's fairly close in wingspan and wing area to your P-51, and came in at just under 6 pounds. Power system is an AXi 4120/14, 12x8 prop, and 16 HR4/5FAUP cells. It came out right smack in the middle of the recommended weight range (5.5-6.5 lb). The only thing it's lacking is duration, which will be solved with a 5S?P pack of LiPolys in the future. Cruises right along like a Corsair should at between 1/3 and 1/2 throttle, has good vertical, and the go-juice for big loops.

Good point, Matt.
A lower cell count solution would drop some weight.
Perhaps a 13D motor instead of a 13Y. It has twice the Kv (RPMs/V)

You only need 16 cells or a 5s4p Lipo pack for this Mustang since it is similar to their Spitfire in size
I've converted the Kyosho Spitfire which has similar specs
I used a Hacker B50 10L 5.2:1, HM 70 3p Opto, 14x10 prop. A B50 11S 5.2:1 might be a little better. Motocalc is off in its amp predictions for the 10L. It pulls about 52amps static but I never need full power. It flys nice at 1/2 - 2/3 throttle. Retracts are Spring Air 603, bored out to accept a 5/32" wire Hobbico strut. With Lipos it comes in at 6lbs 10oz. With the 5s3p 6000 pack you'd loose another 5 oz. It's around 7lbs with 16 3000 Panasonic nmih. You can fly it off smooth short grass. I flew it at SEFF this past June. The combination of Hacker, gearbox, prop it makes a nice sound as it flys past. I even get complements from the glow flyers about the sound it makes.
With Lipos I have flown it as long as 16-17 minutes. 3000 nmih it was a 6-7 minute flight.

Kelvin, I was thinking of getting the Kyosho TigerMoth but after seeing your posts I have decided to go with the Kyosho P51, I have some ideas I think will work well with this kit, I will post my adventure just as you did because all the input you recieved from other members was excellent. I will keep in touch with you and let you know when I have started the my project. I asume around the begining of January I will start.
