Well one of the easiest things that you can do is upgrade the motor (either a better stock motor or a higher turnone) but you will have to make sure that your esc can handle the new motor.
The most popular classes at tracks are 27t and 19t

i was in a similar situation to you, i had a 17t brushed.
i got the castle creations sidewinder esc+brushless motor combo.
its pretty cheap, and it helped make my car go alot faster. just gear it right, and use a decent lipo battery.

With motors its what you pay for it what you get im afraid so spend a little more and get a quality rebuilbdable motor the check piont motors are good and the methods ive had a few of them.
Seems like a lot of people are heading BL power now and with the ezrun combos on ebay going for a steal you may be better of saving up and getting one of those should get you around 35-40mph on a decent battery.
If that esc is a 17 turn limit my advice would be to hunt down a checkpiont money 19turn motor out of all my brushed motors this one preformed the best and the brushes lasted longer too

Dont do what i did with my tourer spent out on a no limit esc then bought lots of low turn motors ie 6turns -13 turns i went through brushes every few runs and a cheap BL setup would of worked out better money wise hope that helps

If you want torque go for the 19x2,19x3 motors give you plenty of grunt
