Default Zenoah G62 Engine (Spring Start)

I have the G62 spring start and the problem I’m having is after each flight my spring is broken. I am starting as the instruction says ½ turn and release. I am on my 5th spring and really like the spring start. Don’t want to convert it to the Electronic Ignition yet so looking for answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Where do the spring breaks occur? At which end or in the middle?

If the one way clutch grabs while the engine is running the spring will be instantly broken. This can happen from lack of lubrication or by the clutch just being bad. A more common cause of broken springs is just simply overwinding. Turn the minimum amount required to get the engine to turn through one compression stroke quickly.

It needs grease. Appears to be dry in the picture.

I did think that it looked a little dry. I'll add a little more oil when I replace the new one. Thanks for the replies.

Again, grease.

Yes, grease! On the spring to prevent coil binding and on the one way clutch to prevent lockup. You may have to replace the clutch. Note we said grease and not oil.

DO NOT USE OIL! It does not stay around very long.

There is a graphite grease made for those one way clutches that you need to get and use regularly. Assume the clutch needs servicing around once every 50 times you use it. Or at least once a season.

This is pretty much the same advice I got from Ralph Cunninghan (Antique) when I fitted a recoil spring to my Zenoah G45.

It occurred to me that a picture of what I have used since the '90s might be helpful. So I went and shot this photo this morning.

Drill a hole in the firewall so the bearing housing will have some clearance. It's hitting the firewall and breaking the spring.

Otherwise, Move the engine forward 1/4" or so.
