Default CARF Galloping Ghost Turbo prop

Following on from an idea seen in JetPower last year we have converted a CARF-models GG P-51 to SPT-10 power. JR 28x, JR8931 servos and a PB Mercury.
I had Biela make a 26 x 14 scale 3 blade prop as a TP version.
I should test fly shortly.

Looks great!

I’ve always wanted to try something like that on a tail dragged, but I’ve been so scared of me dumb thumbing some prop strikes!

Cant wait to see it!

Neat project! I always thought a turbo Mustang would be neat and in particular the Cavalier Mustang.

I notice in your picture the intake duct. I'm curious where on the fuselage the fresh air comes in?

TP units don't like heat in the inlet, so there are openings meshed in the rear lower fuselage. The whole fuselage is a big chamber.

Thanks Paul, need some better light next time.
Didn’t use full power at all during the two test flights, probably will move the balance forward 10mm to load up the tail a little. It’s going to be a great toy once it’s fully dialled in. Usual faultless build by Roger.

It’s really quiet as flown today, the prop was only running around 4000 rpm with the throttle settings used. It takes off at around 50% throttle stick position, there is so much torque if you firewalled the throttle it would just turn left!

There was no one with a camera, but he did video take off and landing on his iPhone. I guess it’s posted on bookface, i’ll Ask him if there is a way of you guys seeing it. Hopefully when I next fly it we can get a video guy.

Of all the 51’s that could be modeled, why choose one associated with such tragedy and sadness?

Using that logic why model ANY military model period?

I guess you should not model airlines, private aircraft, helicopters and the list goes on and on.

Beautiful Ghost Dave. I love the turbo props in the Reno racers. Very nicely done. I have a question for you—I have the same plane( CARF Galloping Ghost) but with a Kolm in-line twin. Getting ready to maiden it soon. Just wondering where your CG point is? I have heard 6” behind leading edge of wing at the fuse all the way up to 7.5” behind. Just wondering where you are flying yours? Also, how much flap deflection are you using for takeoff and landing? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks. Jon

The model belong s to a friend. We are moving the balance forward every couple of flights. My guess is Andreas from CARF set the manual position and he likes a very neutral (tailheavy) set up. On the test flight the elevator was super sensitive around neutral, so I was adding expo and reducing the overal movement. I guess 6 3/4 will be around the figure to suit most.
flap I set the take off position to around 15 degrees and landing as much as we could get! It was I guess 70 degrees, you can just from the photos.

On take off open the throttle very slowly, it swing slowly with all the torque and rudder is not that powerful. As soon as it’s rolling you can start to relax the up held and it will fly off when ready. I understand there is a video of the first take off and landing on Facebook. Mark Brown galloping ghost
