I have an Extra 300, which is my first 'cowled' plane. I can cover the carb with index finger, but can't clip the prop over without moving my hand, to get the fuel to the carb. How are you guy's priming those engines?

Your not taking the cowl off every time are you?

Open the throttle all the way and squirt a couple of drops of fuel in there.

If it is a four stroke engine. just plug the Exhaust pipe with your finger and flip the engine over a couple of times. this will effectively pressurize the fuel tank and force fuel up the line into the carb. Be careful not to flood or hydro lock the engine tho. If after priming like this? the engine spins over freely, then start engine. Works everytime for me with a Saito .91 4 stroke.

I either put a wad of paper towel on the carb or plug the exhaust and flip. Mine is a two stroke and plugging the exhaust works fine. Just not when it's hot.

My starter wont turn it. (ST3250). And it wont start with a back flip unless it's fairly wet. Front flipping this motor is a no-no. It will catch up to the back of your hand.

Covering the exhaust works great. I open my throttle fully to allow more air into the crankcase. My Saito 180 fires on the first flip every time. Just don't forget to pull the throttle down before connecting the glow plug!

My Extra 300S in my Avitar is the same way for priming. My Moki 1.8 loves to be slobbering rich when started so I just pour a bunch of fuel in the open carb. After is's run, it never needs priming.

Another way is to ca a foam ear plug to the end of a dowl. Make an access hole in the cowl and stick the ear plug into the carb. Open throttle wide open, flip until engine has fuel, remove earplug, throttle down, energize glow plug or switch ignition on and away you go.

I've got a Yellow Extra with a 91FX and Pitts muffler. Can't cover the carb and getting to the downward pointing exhaust to cover them and flip is a pain too. I wound up using a long plastic "eyedropper" from a chemical supply house to give the carb a big squirt of fuel. Then close the throttle and give a couple flips (no ignitor). After that, it usually starts on the first flip.
