I just bought a used Rovan with a 36cc engine. It's and older model (not sure how old). When I try pull starting it, about second or third pull it will try and start, but kicks back and breaks the pull starter. It seems as if it has alot of compression. I'm on my 3rd pull starter and lost at what to try next. Anyone else have or had this problem? Thanks in advance for any help with this issue.

Does the flywheel match pull starter teeth or pawls? Sometimes folks buy lightened aftermarket flywheels and the pull starter teeth don't match up to the flywheel or sometimes they just don't buy the correct one for that motor compression, i.e. regular duty vs heavy duty.

It sounds like the flywheel key could be sheared, or the ignition is incorrectly setup. It sounds like the timing is off (firing too soon).
