Thanks Aiden The platform is literally the best float plane to be had in my opinion. The full abs manufacture makes all the waterlogging and covering issues mute that are so troublesome with balsa builds. The failure on my second one was related to the lack of correct prep (roughing of the mating parts before glue up) so definitely my error. I do feel like the wood spar failed on maiden which caused the wreck, I will improve that to car on or aluminum and try again. Probably with epioxy correctly applied this go round.
My try the 82 on it though. A faster up on plane at take off is really necessary for the wave action often days on my preferred lake happy place. Thanks again to you and the Barracuda Hockey for letting this dialog come to completion. Gary, I still need to buy fuel in your neck of the woods. You got any fly time mapped out for this week? The OS 300 wants it's old favorite mix back. It's coughing on this old stock I'm running here in Adrian.
Plus I have a few emptys for you....

I was determined to install a three blade Tru-Turn spinner on the OSMW 56 and Saito FA 40a, I had a .25" x 28 adapter but it was too long. The spinner was 3/16" short of reaching the backplate. I fired up the lathe and made the countersink in the prop nut 1/16" deeper, I cut the.25" x 28 threads in the adapter nut to bottom out. I tapped the m5 threads in the adapter nut all the way through and shortened both ends of the adapter nut by .0625". I also used a slightly thinner washer. After I shortened the adapter I recut the taper as it was before. I also extended the fuse sides by .625 as the Saito is longer than a typical two stroke.

Thanks. It's a really good flyer also with nice scale take offs and landings. It's a shame they stopped making them.

Thanks Jim, the FA 40a is a tight fit, you could get an FA 50 in there by removing the cowl cheeks.I'm still cyphering on a way to create a bolt on wing.

Very nice.
You make me miss my machinist days when I had a little scrap metal and machines at m diposal.
I gave the motor to my club president and he was able to get it apart by torching the drive pully only.

Thanks Todd, I regret that I only bought a lathe about 5 years ago, I think I missed out on a lot of fun.

Micro Mark smaller lathe.

Bill.
What can be the problem. The h/s needle valve is set at 4 1/2 turns out and when stopped the muffler
Smokes slot indicating a lean run. I sent it in to
Hobby services in Champaign IL. And they changed the intake tube oring on the head. Please help.
Don't want to keep running it too lean. The needle valve does not respond very much.
Thanks, Eric

It sounds as if the LS needle is too lean if the LS needle is too lean it causes the HS needle to be unresponsive. Back the LS needle out about 1/2 turn and see if that cures it.

If this slot is too closed by the LS needle/sleeve, the HS needle will be vague or ineffective.

For years I had chucked things up in drills, used sabre saws and jig saws and other aids to make "stuff'", now it's so easy. I am anxious to cover the OSMW 56, but I have a PSA blood test this AM and I have to get Geri's Cruze inspected, 60,000 miles and still has three of it's original tires and does not need brake pads yet.

Hi Dave, the green building is our clubhouse. We meet there every Saturday regardless of the weather. If its too windy or too wet to fly then we just have a good chat and everyone gets a cup of tea and a nice pastry bun. Thanks and kind regards Aidan.

Best wishes on that PSA test. Still getting them here too. Now once a year instead of every six months.

Those lathes can easily pay for themselves in short order. You can take on plenty of head scratcher projects if you care to.

Just got my latest lathe on line today. Bought it in boxes and baskets a few months ago. Had to replace several bearings, a toothed belt and re-fit the cross slide.

First project was a new tailpiece for Saito muffler. This is a FA-82 in a Kadet Sr ARF.

Roughing

Tailpipe O.D.

Forming fillet

Rounding corner

Rubbed with Wenol polish.

Business end

On the Kadet Senior.

Where the music comes from!

Thanks Gary, does that long tail do any tuning. How much would that lathe weigh?

Dave,

As usual, there is but little to gain by tuning a muffled four stroke exhaust. Yet I usually pick up a hundred or so RPM with these tail pieces..
I do increase the total area of the internal baffle pass-thru holes.
Since I rarely ever put much effort for the last 200 RPM , the mod is more for a more pleasing exhaust note. In fact, I enjoy being able to maintain a lower idle RPM in most cases

The lathe manual states the weight at 845 pounds. This one has a three phase 440 volt motor so it has the added weight of the magnetic starter and a three phase Variable Frequency Drive convertor.
This one was made in 1969, much newer than my first lathe as it was built in 1922!
Funny thing, can’t see much difference in the parts they turn out

Already needs to be cleaned!

Ha!
Gotcha on that one!
Actually it is a corner rounding end mill cutter. Just mounted it in a tool holder and used one of the flutes like a form bit.

SigMan,
Thanks, appreciate the comment.

SigMan,
Thanks, appreciate the comment.
very cool, and innovating.
I knew it was not a screwdriver, just didn't know what it was.
