OK what's the secret for getting these mounted on the rubber spindle?

I assume this is serious, so I will bite.

First ensure you have the correct drum for the rubber mandrel. The rubber mandrel is mounted on a threaded shaft. At the base of the rubber mandrel is a nut, unscrew this nut and the mandrel will collapse. slide the sanding drum on the mandrel. Tighten the nut and the mandrel will expand and grip the drum. The nut has a left hand thread.

I think he is being serious. I have experienced similiar problems getting the cylinder over the drum. Occasionally, the drum does not collapse sufficiently to allow for easlily sliding the cylinder over the drum. This can be especially true during warmer weather which causes the rubber drum to expand a bit. In any event, I have found that a little lubricant, preferably powdered, helps. To remove the cylinder, I have found rolling the assembly between by hand to loosen the fit also helps.

OK, I know exactly what you're talking about. Sometimes when you slide them on they grab the rubber, the rubber expands and it won't slide on any further.

I put car wax on the drums usually. Also, if you back the screw out pretty far and slide the rubber into the drum instead of the other way around it's a lot easier.

If you can't get an old drum off, then squeeze it with pliers to break the "seal." That will pretty much ruin the sandpaper, but I doubt you'll find another way to get it off without ruining it anyway if it's stuck.

I take the rubber off the shaft, and push it into the new drum, the slide the whole thing back onto the shaft.

This way I usually have more trouble getting off the old drum than instaling the new one.

I too have a *&^ time getting these things on the drum. Guess I will have to try waxing as per above or something. Getting them off is no problem, I cut them off with a small pair of dikes.

Best answer is to get the metal ones with the welded on adhesive, I think made by Robart (?). Put them on the mandrel one time and forget them.

The rubber drums expand over time and with the heat of sanding. They have a life and get new ones when they are no longer usable. HOWEVER - I have had success by lubricating the drum lightly with plumbers silicone grease which you can buy at Ace, Lowe's or Home Depot in the plumbing parts section (ask if you can't find it). The silicone is not enough of a lubricant to allow the drum to spin if you don't overdo it. Then they also come off again when they are used up.

Consider also the "permanent" carbide sanding drums from Micromark. They do last a very long time. Check out: http://www.micromark.com/ and look for

The drums have an edge on them when their cut to size . remove the inside edge or put over dowel first , will slip right on.

lol....ya keep the "dikes" next to the can of muzzle blast. or near the blinker fluid.
you need those when changing the muffler bearings.

if your tool set is full you have the "engine compartment spreader". and "smoke re-installer" for the small short circuits...

Ok, I know that some people thought this was a joke thread. and my answer may sound like I am adding to the joke, but I am dead serious. spit on it. lubricate the rubber with a little bit of spit, and make sure that you cover all the rubber, then slide on the sanding drum. this makes it easy to slide them on, you can cut off the used drums with an xacto knife, and spit is free.

Before you laugh or make any comments at least try it, you may be surprised.

LOL, I get a chuckle everytime I hear the word dike...First I hate the blasted sanding drums because I usually can only get them on half way also. Let me tell you a foot in mouth story on the word dike..

First let me say one of my relatives is a lesbian, and she has come out of the closet so to speak. Anyhow, The family was seated around the dinner table following a big meal Christmas I think, me and my 2nd father were talking building a workshop or basement or something, and my relative with her significant other was seated across from us. Well we were discussing something with wiring and I just said all ya got to do is grab a pair of dikes and snip it. I shut up real quick when I realized what I had said, and the evil look I got was wicked. My 2nd father just kept talking and I continued trying my best not to laugh...Anyhow I don't use that term much anymore, and everytime I hear the word I bust out laughing..
