H-9 Sukhoi & Saito 450
Anyone do this combo? I am thinking of trying it. Also what is the diameter of the cowl on this plane?
Also do you have to have the digital programmer to use 2 digital Hitecs on the ailerons?

RE: H-9 Sukhoi & Saito 450
I can't help you on the 450 question but will be happy to measure my cowl tomorrow for you. I am mounting a Brison 80cc twin in mine and I would guess the inside diameter of the cowl to be about 10.5 - 11 inches. My Brison is about 10 with plug caps and fits fine. I hear that the DA100 and other 100cc Twins are a real tight fit. What is the weight and HP of the 450?

Hi, I'm sure that it will fit.The 450 weighs a little over 100 oz and puts out 7 hp.
I read that the cowl is 10" dia. the 450 is 9", should be perfect.

Yes, I'm an engine freak. If I couldent do a radial in this plane I wouldent do it at all.
I am however going to strip it and redo it in a different scheme, I love the "Transaero" paint.
I had a yellow aircraft Sukhoi with a Saito 170 and it was my favorite plane I have owned{sold it}, It could have used a little more power, and I would have liked it a little bigger too so I am going to make the same thing but better out of the H-9
I know the big gassers work great and are cheap to run but there is no comparison in sound, and I dont like that chainsaw sound like someone is cutting a log
Is it just my eye or is the H-9 a little off in proportions, like it doesent seem the cowl is big enough in diameter... I keep looking and looking but I'm probably being too critical. Once I see it in a nice scheme I will definately like it
I'm getting the 450 so now I just need to find the kit. I will post picts and a video with good sound[8D]

How's the power and verticle line swith something like that in the nose? I've got a Sukhoi sitting here in the box.....just not sure what to power it with yet.

rpmtech,
I absolutely love it. 7 horses and the sound of a big Saito multi to boot ... what's not to love? You can get more raw power, but you can't get a more elegant package.
3DFanatic,
The gallon jug, huh? That's a good one. There's one in every crowd ...
Seriously though, it doesn't really require a lot of fuel. The manual says it drinks 60cc/minute at full throttle swinging a 22x10 prop on 15% nitro. Of course, it's more than a 60 2-stroke, but I don't drive it around at anywhere near full throttle so it all works out. To make matters worse I'm in the military and stationed on Okinawa, Japan where the fuel costs $35/gal (!) so I'm especially sensitive to managing fuel costs (I find myself doing the throttle management thing even with my smaller planes just to stretch out a tank of fuel) but this beast doesn't really break the bank. I guess it all depends on how you fly it.
NeoGenesis,
I'm no 3D "fanatic" (although I'm working on it a little) so I have not put it to any real tests. Almost 10 years after my first solo I'm still just a sport flier at heart but thanks to the instructions in the rear of the construction manual I have started to work on a trick or two. It accelerates vertically very nicely and balances at the "corrected" CG with no extra weight. The engine weighs 99 oz without mufflers and 103 oz with them but then again the "mufflers" are really only exhaust deflector tubes. I'd be curious, for fair comparison purposes (not like the "comparison" the RCU product guide offers), how much something like a ZDZ weighs including the ignition, ignition battery, and muffer cans.
I actually bought the engine specifically to go into an N1K2 George I'm building from Jerry Bates Plans. I'm much more into scale and scratch building than aerobatics, but scale takes time and scratch building takes even more time so I bought an ARF to throw the engine into to keep me busy while the George shapes up and it's worked out pretty well.

You wouldn't want to see me flying this monster. I'd bore you to death and probably piss you off too with my largely pedestrian flying and failed attempts at hovering ...

Personally...........I think a BME 110 os a little extreme. If your not careful and use throttle managment...........you may rip the thing apart. I think a ZDZ 80 on a pipe may do the trick. Will have to do some re-engineering........but it would be worth it.

Actually ... what prop (diameter and pitch) do you all think would be optimal for this engine/plane combo? Also, anybody got a preference as to a make of propeller (Bolly, Pro Zinger, etc.) and why? Any pointers would be great!

I've always been fascinated with that particular radial and I'm glad to see someone using it. I, too, would like to see a video. Maybe if we keep asking for one you'll quit worrying about boring us. LOL

Not bored here. I owned the .90 3 cyl radial for quite awhile. I loved that engine. I still kick myself for selling it. I just had to fund the 46% Giles. Stupid me. I will second the not being bored with a video.
