prop shaft slack
I noticed that my irvine 53 has a little bit of slack in the prop shaft when I move the prop back and forth sideways. There is just a little noticeable tic that I can feel. I've only run 3 gallons of fuel through it. Is this normal or is there a problem?

RE: prop shaft slack
If by sideways you mean moving the tips of the prop backwards and forwards then what you're most likely feeling is the tiny clearances at both ends of the rod. These are the clearances that give that "click" when you turn through the pinch at TDC. The length of the prop will amplify these clearances maybe 10 to 15 times.

RE: prop shaft slack
Funny, I have one the same way. I had a bearing whineing in it for a while
then the noise quit. About that time I noticed the movement when moving
the prop side to side. Yesterday I pulled it apart.. The looseness is in the rear
bearing on mine. The bearing turns smooth and quiet. However when stuck
back on the crank while holding the bearing you can move the crank side to
side a little bit. Guess I will replace the bearing. My concern was/is that the
slop in the bearing will cause the fit between the crank and the block to open
up destroying the seal there and thus the engine .............
