Default Ducted Fans (EDF)

I have been seeing a lot of the GWS EDF-50's around, which look super in most fuselage bodies. My question is, are they better performers than something like the High Authority direct drive idea?

Also, how big (or small) should a EDF be for these micro helis? The EDF-50 is 50mm I believe, would a 40 work better? Why or why not?
Does the CG change significantly and how do you compensate (like moving batts forward or back)?

Any other comments would be welcomed!

Default RE: Ducted Fans (EDF)

Hi

What I going to say is based on what I experience in Direct Drive and EDF50. EDF50 consist of 2 different types of motor model and so do EDF40:
http://www.gws.com.tw/english/produc...stem/edf50.htm

So both motor are the same except that one having smaller Cylindrical Ducted diameter and therefore smaller diameter blades. Weight also different.

Some uses EDF50 while others use EDF40. It is all up to you preference. In terms of thrust power.. EDF50 is a bit higher than EDF40 but the noise for EDF40 is lower.

EDF is definitely heavier than DD and noisier also (EDF = Vacuum Cleaner; DD = Mosquito buzzing near ear)

My personal point of view... Both are almost equal power of authority. So..it is up to you whether u want to have Fan Tail (Comanche, Dauphin) or Tail Blades (Huey, Blackhawk, Apache) look.

As for CoGravity, it depends on what electronic components, Main Motor and battery u have. Some only need to move their electronic parts to the far front, some need to chop off a little bit of length out of the tail boom while other requires to chop off quiet alot. Some even have to resort to Downward Tilted Ducted fan in order to provide some lift at the tail to compensate the tail weight.
