I'm wondering if there are actual engineers doing this, or if it's guys just trying things out and "seeing what works" so to say.

I wonder how much of a difference it would make if real engineers were used though.

RE: I'm curious, who are the people that design rc cars?
im sure there is alot of people that work on the "design" of a RC car.
the process probably goes something like this.
marketing researches what is the "new thing" and what people will buy.
they give specs to the concept artists.
concept artists sketch up a basic outline of what the car will look like and the specs it will have (motor, wheelbase, etc.)
they hand this off to the engineers.
engineers scratch up a prototype and it gets reviewed (by engineers, marketing, test drivers, etc etc). people give feedback on what worked what didnt and what needs to be changed. this step is repeated several times till close to release.
then the new car is given to marketing to start the hype wagon and generate intrest including "spy shots" promos etc. then release.
final version is done and manufacturing starts and it ships out.
I am sure diffrent companies do it diffrent but this is a basic view of what goes on during a design.
maybe we can get a rep from a company to get us in touch with some people from the design team to give us more info.

i would have to say that they are lucky thats all. Designing rc's all the time, and testing them. It's pure knowledge when designing rc's tho, not a hit or miss process.
