I always said that I would "fly the covering off" of my Modeltech Magic. And at the time I said it I was hoping it would be a little further down the line so to speak but as luck would have it, the last time I flew it half of the bottom covering on the horizontal stab literally flew off while in flight. Needless to say, the exhaust from the engine totally saturated the newly exposed balsa before I could get 'er down.

Anyone know of an effective means of soaking up the fuel out of the balsa???

A couple of flyin' buddies have suggested some stuff called K2R, which is some type of stain remover that will soak it up but I can't seem to find it locally. Currently I'm trying baking soda which seems to help some what but not enough to completely dry it up.

This really stinks because the Magic was my favorite plane to fly (until yesterday when I flew the maiden on a new profile design that I've been working on) and I hate the idea of reworking the horizontal stab to get MonoKote to stick to it.

Any ideas???

K2R Spot Remover is the best way. Try Walmart.

Baring that, kitty litter does a good job of soaking it out, and of course you can wipe some off with acetone, but, acetone will not draw it out of the wood.

I have looked everywhere, including Wal-Mart.......no one seems to stock the stuff.......bummer. The next time I'm up around Fort Worth or Dallas I'll look there. But I'll try the kitty litter - that sounds feasible that it would soak up the mess.

My last can of K2R was wasted on carpet stains and now it doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

Try some corn starch mixed with rubbing alcohol to form a paste. let dry like the K2R, and dust off. May need to repeat.

You can try a hot iron over paper towels. The heat will draw up the oil and the paper towel should absorb most of it. After that, treat the surface with a coat of Balsaright or another type of sealer for iron on coverings and recover the surface.

I think Kroger still carries the K2r, and maybe Tom Thumb...but can't remember, but ain't seen it in Wal-Mart in several years either.

You can also use denatured alcohol to pull the oil out. Soak the balsa with it and then wipe up the alcohol and the oil comes with it. Then give a coat or two of Balsa rite and you are all set.

if your still havin problems finding k2r, try the website, www.spencershardware.com . go to the shop online link and search under description field for a listing as simply k2r. you can have it shipped directly to your door step.

I have been able to get K2R at a local Ace hardware. But there may be issues in different parts of the countery about the sales of it.

baking soda or whiting from the paint store work well in conjunction with alcohol , acetone or carburator cleaner. Be sure you have good ventilation with the acetone.

Check out this thread. The name has changed so it might be easier if you look for this. I spent time going to WalMart, Kmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and finally found K2R at Ace Hardware. Had I known about this, I would have found it in the first place I looked. Good Luck.

Your browser will wrap text to fit text when it can, but because you included a URL which can not be broken up. (ie can not make part of it on one line and part on the next.), it didn't wrap. The size of the window is defiend by the software they use here. It will not go larger than this, but it CAN be smaller to fit your screen when possible.

This also depends on your screen size as it looks just fine on my screen.

The name hasn't changed. Its still K2R and still made by Spontex. Spotlifter is not similar.
