removing old iron on covering
i am fixing to start rebuilding an old plane that is about 20 years old.. it has some sort of iron on covering on it that is all wrinkled and brittle.. you cant peel any covering off it just breaks off into little bitty pieces about the size of a dime... any suggestions on getting this stuff off... its just one big mess

I had the same problem and I tried heat solvents and that was getting me nowhere fast. I then tried regular old clear packing tape that you use to tape up boxes, I just stuck it down and pulled it off, volia! the adheadsive came off with it, and it's cheap to throw away after lifting all the color off the wood.

the clear tape seems to work best - but it is still a painstaking process - - this is the biggest mess ive ever got into.. i think it would be quicker to build a whole new plane..

Recently r-covered a plane from a friend. Make sure you get all those little bits and bumps flat! Unless you are going with clear film don't worry about the color stains in the wood. As long as your surfaces are flat and smooth it will look good.
