I posted this question in a different forum but did not recieve any specific answers so i hope someone can help me out here. I have a new in box Hanger 9 edge 540 and wanted to put a gas engine on it for economical fuel reasons. I was told it was not big enough or built for a gas engine. Why is this airplane not able to handle a gas engine? The wingspan is 78" (longer than a lot of gas engine airplanes out there) and weighs between 11.5-13lbs finished. Why can a person put a gas engine on a smaller airplane but not this larger one? My flying buddy has a SIG cap 231 and Sig suggests useing a 2.4 on his but no-one suggest useing a gas on the hanger 9 model. His wing is shorter by 5" and I have more surface area than he does.The firewalls look both structurally sound for a gas engine and the rest of the airframes look almost the same also. Any answers to these questions would be appreciated since I am just breaking into the gas airplane part of the hobby. Thanks

It will fly and balance but it gets to over 13 lbs - been there -
really not a great setup unless you are a careful flyer.
accidental snaps are quite easy .
frankly I would opt for a larger/lighter model.

Been there done that as well with a light BME 44. Sure it will fly but like a brick!!
Landings are hot. There really just isn't a good unlimited gas motor for this plane.

Thanks guys , either im selling it or maybe go with a glow but I want to go gas so i will probably ask at the club then put it on ebay.

Don - not so - My ZDZ40 RE was in a 11 lb total ready to fly all balsa fuselage model -NO plywood except for four attaching points .

The Hangar 9 Edge simply isn't made for a gasser. I have one with a Moki 180 and that's as heavy a motor as I would use. I would spend your money and get a bigger plane and then think about a 50cc gasser. Not for this H9 Edge though, it's just not the plane for it. Mine is at least 12lbs even with all my carbon fiber aftermarket parts and simple set-up.

i had one 2 years ago with a zdz 40 on it at my skill level at the time i thought it flew pretty well and loved having a gas vs glow plane the zdz ran very smooth and the firewall as pretty thick from the factory. i think a satio or ys shakes more than a zdz as i have found it you are not afaird to touch the needles most gas engines run very smooth and will not shake the plane apart now a blender on the other hand that is a different story

Maybe that's the secret, the planes I tried were "kits" made almost completely of plywood. I have an Ohio R/C G300 that weighs 14lbs. and has an OS 1.60 in it. The OS is a great engine but sort of out of it's element on a 14 lb. plane. On the other hand I have a Brison 2.4 that I would love to try in it but after having a Midwest 300S just about destroyed by vibration from this engine I'm afraid to try it. The G300 has a lot more balsa then the 300S had, what do you think ?

I had a Hanger 9 edge with an RCS 140 engine on it. The plane flew very well but was not unlimited, total weight was(if I recall) 12-1/2lbs.

I have one with a FPE 2.4 that has over 100 flights on it with no problems at all. The only thing I did was install the elevator servo's in the tail. With this setup it needed no other weight added for balance and flies great. One other thing about the Hangar 9 Edge is that they tend to be a bit tail heavy. This makes them a good candidate for gas.

The Sig Extra ARF is the same size plane and they recommend a 2.4 gas!

This cracks me up!!!

There have been several (and I mean several) posts about this plane on gas and it has been very consistant. 99% of us 3D pilots who have tried this combo agree that this plane has no business with a gasser on it and the other 1% loves it. 900sqin wing area at 13lbs+ = poop!

If you are not into light flying planes then by all means put a gasser on it. If you want to learn 3D then do not put a gasser on the front of it. I really didn't start to get good at 3D until I had a plane that flew very light and was 3D capable of course. If I knew then what I know now , I would have put a saito 180 on mine.

it does help if the plane is stong at 3d along with having all those sq inches the 33-40% planes r were sq. inches are found

Same here, My Edge flew extremely well with a ZDZ 40 on the front for sport type flying. But if you even think of 3d flying with this setup your going to hate it to death . Very snappy at this weight and not really all that capable in hard core 3d maneuvers. I think a Ys140 would be the ultimate light and powerfull combo with the Saito 180 combo being the most affordable and popular.
