wing retainers.
I assembled my H9,33% CAP with 1/4" 20 steel bolts into steel T nuts in the wing - I don't like this setup -but was cutting corners timewise--- I have same setup on my 330 --but have hard rubber washers -not the plastic washers I used this time .
Anyway ------- first flight - 5 minutes in - 200 ft up - one panel slides out about 6"
Instant flat spin.
I was really caught off guard-my spotter said -the panel came out!
I shut off the engine
He said hold full up -which is where I was --
The plane stayed in a slow flat spin -landed in 1' tall pasture grass.
Total damage one gear leg bent back hard --the in cowl exhaust caught in the damp morning soil-dirt. which cracked three of the engine stand off triangular braces and one cowl mount - That and one whel pant - that's all -
will be flying tomorrow.
The part which surprised m was that the loose panel held position - .
I picked up the plane and simply slid it from the tube .
So - no more steel to steel retainer setups -which I never put on my own planes and will never do it again.
Back to bolts into maple blocks or my capture bolt setup -

RE: wing retainers.
your setup is actually better than the steel to steel setup -
occasionally, run some CA into the block and let it cure -just to keep the nylon bolt fitting nicely

RE: wing retainers.
Hi Dick Hanson,
Sorry about your wing panel coming loose. []
This is a bit of a worry, I'm just finishing off a H9 33% Su-31 which uses the same wing retaining method.
I was thinking of using a large 1" to 1&1/2" washer and split spring washer. I might try to drill a hole through the 1/4" cap head and secure it with wire, to stop it unscrewing with vibration.
What do you think and what is your capture bolt setup please ?
The last thing I need is for the wings to come off on the Su-31's maiden flight [:@]
Thanks.

my capture bolt setup -
I have used your capture system several times since first seeing it on your web site. It's fantastic. I even use it on the bottom two cowl fasteners on my Carden Extra, works great, no reaching down in tight places for the screws.

RE: wing retainers.
I'm using the standard nylon bolt on my 33% extra and they have not moved at all! Sorry to hear about the landing Dick. Glad to hear damage is minimal!
