Possible to use a 6 ch transmitter with a 4 ch receiver?
I'm going to start a new heli from scratch (fixed pitch) with a new radio controller. I wanted to get a tansmitter that can be extended for use should I upgrade my heli to a full 3D flying machine in the future. So is it possible to use e.g. 6 ch transmitter for the new 4 ch. heli?

Transmitter settings don't matter - as long as you match the correct channel on the reciever to the corresponding channel on the transmitter.
example:
1 - throttle
2 - rudder
3 - elevator
4 - aileron
5 - gyro gain
6 - pitch
I think that's the standard Mode 2 channel assignments. (we're Mode 1 here in Australia)
Features like your gear switch etc. on higher channels (7 and above) will just be ignored by the reciever.
For the money, the Hitec Eclipse 7 (it's a 7 channel QPCM programmable transmitter) is great value with a LOT of features that can take you to 3D heli's and beyond.
I guess I'm biased - cos that's what I use.... money was a BIG decider when I bought it.
If you want to go ALL THE WAY then by all means, get a JR 3810x or similar, or a Futaba, but you are looking at some SERIOUS dollars there!!

Thx, So if I have a 4 ch receiver:
1- throttle
2 - rudder
3 - elevator
4 - aileron
ch 5 & 6 on my 6 ch transmitter would be idle right?

Mode 1 - Throttle on the RIGHT stick is channel 3 for throttle
Mode 2 - Throttle on the LEFT stick is channel 1 for throttle
Mode 3 is like Mode 1, but has the sticks swapped
The higher channels are standard across all heli modes.
5 - Gyro gain
6 - pitch
7 - Gyro HH On/Off
etc....
Nathan.
