Well, I just bought a plane that has a lot of overspray on it... clear overspray...

I'm not sure what kind of overspray it is ... but it's clear... maybe the former owner tried to clearcoat the plane with Krylon ... The finish is much duller that the Ultracote covering... the bottom of the wings and fuse are not coated and look great...

I've tried everything I can think of to get it off without damaging the Ultracote...

1. nail polish remover
2. Pacer Z7 debonder
3. denatured alcohol
4. lacquer thinner
5. Parks Semi-past paint finish and stain remover (methylene chloride free)
6. VM & P Naphtha
7. Tower Hobbies Build-it debonder
8. Eagle one - mag & aluminum (auto) wheel polish

The lacquer thinner and Tower debonder work the best... they take it off... but require significant rubbing and continued application... Doing the top of a 35% wing might take several days.... but the good news is that the Ultracote underneath is still shinny and good...

I like my planes to look GOOD... and I need to get this overspray off...!!

If it's just paint overspray on film covering, then detailing clay will probably do the trick. You can get detailing clay (yes it's just a bar of clay) at autozone or any other auto store. Get a spray bottle of quick detailer spray to use with the clay (I think Mother's actually sells a kit that comes with clay and detailing spray). Not cheap, but requires very little effort and won't affect the surface like chemicals will.

This stuff is awesome for getting stuck on crud off your cars' clearcoat too.

"detaling clay" sounds more practical than my suggestion which would be..
Strip it of all covering, recover with new.

I was thinking along the lines of straight Acetone. It cuts paint like crazy, and doesn't hurt the covering.

You're right... I bought some Acetone ... it didn't work....!!!

BUT....

I went to a local auto paint store... and inquired about the problem ... I really went there to buy some of the Overspray Clay that was recommended above... However, the salesperson, who listened intently to my discourse of the problem, suggested that I use a 3M product. She said that she had personally used it on this type of problem before and it worked great....

Well, it DOES work GREAT... it really removes the operspray and you don't have to rub too hard... just consistently... I've done my wings and the canopy and they look great...!!!

The product is: 3 General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, product #: 08984. It comes in a plain red and white can with a nice spout for damping a cleaning rag. The cost was $10.87 including tax... About half the clay ...

I haven't gone over my vinyl graphics yet... but the fuse is next... I will let you know what the graphics outcome is.
