Edge 540 elevator servos
I'm putting together a hangar 9 edge 540 120 and I don't like the way the elevator servo and the push rod goes. I feel that one servo is not enough to move two elevator surfaces. Hangar9 should have designed this airplane each elevator with independent servos and near the control surface not inside the airplane. Anyone have an idea on how should I mount the servos or should I just leave them they way the manual described to mount them.
thank,

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
I put 2 evevator servos in my 540 Edge. I put them on either side of the pull-pull rudder. If you use carbon fiber pushrods and run them to the opposite sides of the elevator it works fine. I did space one of the servos up 1/8 to keep the pushrods from touching where they cross. It takes a little time to lay every thing out for the lengths, but works great.

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
I was thinking about doing the same thing but I wasn't sure if the pushrod would work great in such length. Hey RICK9303 what type of engine do you have in your edge 540 120? I was thinking about going with a gasoline engine but I couldn't find any lightweight engine with a lot of power to pull the hanger 9 edge 540 at great velocity. I think the Saito 180 is the best choice I just don’t like the full efficient of the engine.
Thank you

I have been flying the H9 Edge 540 for two years with a single servo and the push rod provided. I suppose you can add tail weight with servos in the back but I didn't think it was necessary. My plane flies fine with a single multiplex servo and push rod. I'm also using the Saito 180 for power.

Depending on what motor you are using. In my case a os 1.60. i ended up putting 2 elevators servos right under the stab on each side of the fuse. all you have to do is make a template of of poster board and then make it out of light-ply. and glue it to the aera that you are going to put the servos. I dont have any pictures to post other wise it would be easier to show you then trying to explain to you.

Duenasch, The best engine for the Edge, is either the OS160 or the Saito180. I have a Saito180 and it flys
great. Another club member, has it with the OS160 and it flys well too. Of course you could go with a YS140
or a Moki 180. As far a gas engines, RC Showcase (ZDZ), also carries a line of smaller gas engines (RDS), I
believe. They look like glow engines with gas carbs. IMO, the Edge will fly better with a glow engine, either 2
or 4 stroke.

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
I have the World Models Cap232 of the same size. Not a 3-Der, so I have a Saito 150 in it.
This arf comes with a shaft running across the fuselage. Evelator servo locates in the wing
well area, one push rod back to the shaft. Bell-crank on the shaft, shaft exits out the sides,
where control arms connect. Then Push rods back to the elevators.
I have many flights with this airplane, and have not had any problems. Just goes to show
that there are many good ways to do the job. Do the one you have the most faith in.

I'll be posting pictures before the first flight which is schedule by the end of the year.
Once again thank you

Hi duenasch, I´m building the H9 Edge 540 1/4 too, and my question is; if you istall two servos for elevator in the tail, do you keep the ruder pull pull system in the stock position?

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
Rafael,
I put two servos in the elevator along the side of the fuselage and yes I kept the pull-pull. What I did is I opened the bottom of the fuselage to glue the servo wood frame and I was able to mount the servos that way. If you haven't install the stabilizer and the rudder glue the servo wood frame first. I haven't flown the plane yet because over in NJ is too windy and the first few flights are real critical. I will write about my fly’s in case anyone wants to know.
I went with the Saito 180 engine, I get seven engine runs with the gallon but it’s the ideal engine for the plane.
Sorry for replying so late. "I went on Vacation"

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
Thank you duenasch, I think I will go with the two elevator servos too. I have not atached the stab so I think it will be easier, thanks for your help.
I alredy have the saito 180 and a slimline pitts muffler, hitec MG645 servos all around and a digital for ruder. I´m waiting for the CF spinner, and 4000mAh lipo, I think the maiden will be in two weeks I wil post about my fly´s too.
Thanks again

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
Rafael,
You should go with servo ruder Hitec 5645 is digital and provides more torque than the one you mention. At first I was going to go with the 645 but I don't know if it was going to be enough torque. I'm using 5625 for elevators and ailerons. I'm also using an 81 to reduce weight.
But let me know how it goes.
thanks

RE: Edge 540 elevator servos
I've done these planes with both digital and analog style servos, both had rear elevator servos.
I can say without a doubt the plane equipped with the Hitec digitals was Sooooo hooked up. I've never experienced a plane that performed so seemingly precise. Go digital... I know I would if I could afford it.
My Edge although equipped with the analogs is still a precise aircraft, but once I built the other one with the digitals, all I can say is WOW,,,there's something to those for sure.
