In Line Twins
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1/4 scale mustang with an in line twin. problem is, i forgot to ask him which one!!
I am guessing either a 3W 100cc or a ZDZ 80 or 100cc. i know that ZDZ is re-issueing there motor, so i know that it is not a "new" motor.
the plane has been flow twice.
so, here is my question for your experts. what should i look for in the motor? any problems with either brand of twin? if so, what type of problems and are they easily fixed.
at the risk of being flamed, im posting this on the twin forum as well.
i appreciate your help.
cheers

This problem with the Tigre is built in -
Basically you must change fuel flow balance
some guys put a restricter to front engine -in the crank - The rear cyl needs MORE fuel -even if the flow internally was correct
Why?
because the rear cylinder has to get rid of internal heat as well as heat from forward cyl.
The ZDZ with individual carbs has a much better chance of running with balanced heat.
The ST on gasoline is a worst case scenario.

The NEW ZDZ 80 and 100 cc R2 inline Twin gas engines from ZDZ are completely new designs and not a re-ssue, or re-hash, of a previous ZDZ inline design. I doubt if the Mustang has the New 100 R2 in line in it as we have not shipped any yet in North America.

RE: In Line Twins
thanks to all for their reply's. i know it is not a new ZDZ inline twin, just wondering out loud what issues there are with either brand of in line twin.
since the RCShowcase guys answered ( i called wed but i imagine you had left for turkey day!) what issues or problems existed with the old style ZDZ 100 and 80?? carburator problems? overheating of the back cylinder???
nice to hear that the 3W ran just fine.
cheers to all

We sold , i think, only one or two of the old inlines before they were dropped from the line up, so we have limited experaince. There was also a 120 inline with THREE 40 cc cylinders! They were of a steel liner design and rather heavy and ZDZ was moving to engines with all Nikisal plating on the aluminum cylinder wall. We have never had one returned for service......

RE: In Line Twins
Joe, here is a really dumb question. Why don't you get back with the guy who has the plane for sale and ask him about the engine?
Here are photos of a 3W inline twin in a 3W Mustang. The plane really flew well. The guy indicated that he worked hard to fix the cooling problems before he was satisfied with it. There is a cooling air tunnel which exits out the back like the full scale did. These photos were made at Bomber Field last September.

RE: In Line Twins
1st, thanks for the pics...and no, its not a really dumb question, but i cannot get ahold of the guy until later in the week and then i will be committed to traveling to see him. i'll call him monday but im out of town until thursday or friday.
i was just wondering out loud what the general experience was on these in line twins. i had an opportunity to purchase a 3W P-51 last year and didnt jump on it....stupid stupid stupid...oh well, this is a good deal (i think) and if so, i'll be happy with the plane and the motor.
cheers

Another E Mail just asked the same question!
See my first post on this .
You must drop rear compression till heat levels out -
sure the power is less but unles you could water jacket the darn things you simply can't get proper airflow - look at the various installations - the rear cyl is also up against a wall on some .

RE: In Line Twins
Joe, Lenny in New Orleans here. I have done 3 of these setups and it takes a lot of engineering and ducting to make it work in a P51 or Spit cowling. I make a dedicated duct for the rear cylinder blowing directly on it and make the the opening for the front cyl, fairly small. You might try and avoid having a flat firewall right behind the rear cylinder and have lots of exit air, even if you loose some of the scale appearance.

RE: In Line Twins
Just read in a german rc forum that ZDZ allready have a prototype of a 150ccm 3 cylinder inline. It seems that all the new ZDZs are based on the 50ccm cylinder. Maybe a new 4 cylinder boxer is not far away.

RE: In Line Twins
hi lenny:
thanks for your pics of what you did. i like it... im being lazy and trying not to have to make huge modifications to the existing plane, since it already is done and i just want to fly it. but, i like the scoop for the rear cylinder... very cool.
is this for an american eagle plane?
also, what do you think about the ducting from the radiator being used to route the air up from the radiator to the rear cylinder via a hose. the firewall already has a hole cut in it behind the rear cylinder, as per the plans from fiberclassics.
hey, my in line twin has a carb on each side, yours looks like it is on the same side. is that the 80 or the 100 or new?
cheers
joe
ps, i am still working on the drive and would like to see if you are still interested in our arrangement previously discussed. i'll email you off line.

RE: In Line Twins
Joe, the hose idea is fine if there is enough outlet air for both cylinders on the cowling. Those are 2 different AE P51s and the third is in an AE 109. These are ZDZ80s, not the new ones that just came out.
