Default What do you use for flying wires?

What do most of you guys use for flying wires on 35-40% biplanes? I have a 37% BME Ultimate that I think I would like to use somthing other than stock. I was thinking about 150# down rigger line?

Any thoughts?

Jim!

I use Nelson Hobbies brass plated stainless steel cable - it is the very heavy duty stuff used for pull-pull cables. I swage the cable using thick walled 7/64 copper tubing after making a loop in which to attach to the clevis / turnbuckle.. I put a piece of black heat shrink over the swage and it looks a lot like the real thing...

Works great ... looks great.

Early bipes and some antique aircraft did use cable but the newer types use stainless steel airfoiled flying and landing (tierods as they are called now).

I use the stiffing nickel steel flat strips out of discarded windshield wiper blades. The larger size blades have of course the longer strips 2 x per blade..Normally can be had for free at your auto parts stores on a rainy/snowy day. My local Auto Zone normally supplies me enough on a slushy day to supply me for a year. Silver solder to normal r/c clevis's will hold forever.

Just remember if you tighten em too tight you can ruin your incidence and washout settings.
If not flying for a while you might want to loosen em up, so as not to pull a warp into a flying surface. Kinda like a guitar or violin when stored if left tight you've lost it.

Also handy is the plastic slide strips from some to use for sliding canopy attachments.

Will try to attach a pic of both the tierods and the sliding canopy on my Pitts S2a

Sorry it downloaded twice..whaswiddat...idonkno!

There is only one type of flying wires to use on large scale models (in my humble opinion).
It comes from a guy in Switzerland Hans Gautschi. (Aero Scale Products)
It is stainless steel streamlined wire with a rolled thread on each end. It comes with tiny clevises and cotter pins just like full size, The threads are right/left hand on each end so the wire is actually a turnbuckle.
You send him a hole to hole length and he will make the wires to suit. There are various sizes (diameter)for different scale of models. I have them on my Flair Tiger Moth and also on my GP Christen Eagle.

They are not cheap but they don't look cheap either.

Have a look at his web site .

He even has a concealed attachment system so you can have the wire connect to a plate under the covering just like a full scale Pitts for example.

Hans is very helpful and he is very reliable and easy to deal with.

I've been using aramid cord for years with great sucess. Aramid cord is about a fifth of the weight of stainless steel cord.

Here is my GP Christen Eagle with is new Flying Wires. Looks a whole lot better than what came in the kit.

Takes a little while to set up but I think it is worth it.

Man, the plane looks great! I especially like the white teeth, bright!

I have some wires heading to me from Nelson Hobbies. They look the part and I would like to create my own ends for them.

Thanks to all for your suggestions!

The Pilot is supposed to be Patty Wagstaff.!!
I think the Nelson wires have a similar section to mineand will look great.
I do like the scale clevises and the turnbuckle action on Hans wires.
As I said they were not cheap. I think for the whole wing wires set it cost me about A$180. Thats about US$ 140. I have been using them for some time now. Being lazy there is nothing to do when they arrive, you just put them on and tighten them up and you are done.
The ones on my Tiger moth are painted yellow like the full size.

I would like to see a photo of yours when you have finished.

Ha ha, I'm a bit lazy myself, but just had this strange urge to do a little tinkering... (Out of character believe me... )

Anyway, I will post some pictures when I get them done. If you get FLYRC magazine, you will be able to see the article in the May issue, (or maybe June depending on scheduling)

Jim!
