Default CAP 232 Lanier, What engine?

What engine would you recomend for a CAP Lanier? I'm looking for a very good performer, must be 3D capable. Would the BME50 be a right choise or Brison 3.2?
Please advice.

What might be a good target weight for this airplane?

Mine has a 3W-60 with a 22x12 Menz S.

Weighs in at 17.5 lbs. Unlimited vertical.

Great flyer.

Thanks for the picture, looks nice!. Wonder if you can do 3D with this combo; such as torque rolls, waterfalls, etc

Let me know if the CAP Lanier with BME50 does 3D. I am very interested on knowing the real 3D capabilities of this airplane. I know that high power to weight ratio is what we need to do 3D, with a light weight airplane the torque rolls will be easier. Did you use all the wood that the kit provided?
I am asking this question because I hearded that the Lanier might come up a little bit heavier and it is necessary to trim out weight here and there.

Albatross,

My combo will 3D. However the plane probably could have been a little lighter. I used 2 servos on the rudder while 1 servo with pull-pull probably would have done.

The 3W I have is the k version which weighs a little over 5.25 lbs and is rated at 5.5 hp. I imagine the BME is lighter but not sure of the power.

As for trimming wood, not many places to do this. The fuselage sides are pretty well cut out already.

Carbon fiber landing gear or wing tube would help.

Default CAP 232 Lanier, What engine?

Hey guys mine came out at (Man I hate to print this) 17 pounds 15.8 oz. Heavier than I anticipated. I now have three flights on it and I do have unlimited verticle and I expect it will only get better as my engine has less than a gallon of fuel through it. And I haven't touched the needles. Waterfalls are awsome, as are pop ups. I didn't hover much but the plane is capable, and it will harrier very well. Mine pitches to the belly in knife edge, but I think just about all caps do. My CG is about a 1/2 inch in front of the wing tube. I did eliminate the sheeting on the bottom of the fuse, and the sheetinmg under the turtle deck. I bought mine framed up so I couldn't do much more but if you build it a lot of weight could be taken out of the turtle deck area. I also used a big 1/4 scale servo for the rudder so there is some weight in it as well. Its on a pull pull system. I am also going to get some lighter wheels and prolly carbon gear. May get a 1/2 pound with those 2 items. The plane fly's light though and is a real floater on landing. Puts my old H9 1/4 scale cap to shame! Happy flying guys and good luck

Thanks a lot for this input, is just awesome the amount of good feedback.
I think that the real challenge is building a light weight airframe. By the way I just visited one site, it offers a lot of good information about 3D, you may know already about it; nevertheless if you have some time check this link:

http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Cockpit/3328/

I may substitute some parts for composite materials such as carbon fiber...

If anyone out there is RC builder, What is your experience in regards to the use of carbon composite materials for RC airplanes?

mine has a zdz 60 that came out at 19lbs. way to heavy! but it flies awsome. it will float forever. landings are a way to easy. does the best waterfalls and knife edge spin. this is the first plane i have ever owned that can do a knife edge loop with pleanty of power to spare. I sure would like to know how I could shave off some weight though.

I almost got the zdz 60 but when I called they were out of them. I think the bme 50 will have plenty of power when it gets fully broken in and leaned out. I am having radio interference problems right now so I haven't got to fly it much!

Default Interference problems

Capthis,

I too had interference problems with my BME 44. I ended up attaching the ground wire with a hose clamp on the spark plug along with screwing it into the block.
It completely solved my problems. Now I can place my batteries and equipment anywhere without any problems. I got the idea from my brison 3.2. Give it a shot and I bet your interference goes away.
