Dremel cutting disc for wood?
Hi
I've bought a 'Dremel' kind of rotary tool.
What kind of disc should I get for it to cut wood (Liteply & balsa)?
I've tried the one that is brown on both sides but it have to be for metal or something because when I try to chop some wooden dowels nothing happens except a small cut that's more "burned" through friction than cut.

You can get a mini circular saw attachment for a Dremel that should do the job.
I've been looking at one in my local hardware store. Seems to have some kind of guard around the blade which is probably a sensible idea.
You will soon be wondering how you managed to live without a Dremel!

Well it's not a Dremel, it looks exactly like it but it cost only 1/3 and I picked it up as a introduction special in a newly opened hardware store.
I got quite dissapointed that there's no disc included that can cut wood easily.
Would be perfect to trim off too long dowels and spars after a wing is build.

Thanks, but I live in Scandinavia and have to try something more local than ordering a $25 product from overseas
I'm gonna go to the hardware store and ask around if they have something suitable.

If they have Dremel parts/accessories where you are at, get the dremel circular saw AND the insert set (4 inserts to hold different size items/bits and a threaded collar). The inserts will handle from 1/32" drill bits up to about 1/8" bits. You will also find out that SOME of the accessories for a Dremel (Rotary tool) have a shaft size that is too small for the standard insert.

Hi Test005,
Are the days starting to get longer yet?
If you don't have one of those mega hardware type stores that sell Dremel accessories there is another brand called "Permagrit" that make all sorts of goodies, (even better quality than the Dremel expendables). These are usually available from suppliers of professional machine tools and the like. See who your local mechanic or machine shop orders their supplies from?
If you can't source either locally I guess you will have to order from a "local" european supplier. Believe it or not my nephew who lives in Italy (Milan) sent me some "Permagrit" cut off wheels he purchased from a South African hardware chain that just opened an outlet before Christmas.
Good Luck,
Colin

Get the dark grey wheels, not the brown colored wheels. The dark grey wheels are fiberglass reinforced and will make short work of cutting anything short of ceramic. They are also considerably more resistant to breaking.
I buy 'em in the bulk pack.

If you buy those blades, by all means buy the guard, or just get the new circular saw attachment from Dremel. Works as advertised, but it does take a bit of practice to make accurate cuts ('cuz you can't see the cut line very well thorugh the guard).

You can get a Dremel diamond cutting wheel -- it is perfect for just about every cutting job out there. It doesn't care if it's wood, plastic, fiberglas or metal.

Thanks.
I really have to go look for something better to cut wood with.
We have Dremel here and whatever comes with them.
This tool I bought looks and feel just like a Dremel and uses the same bits so I can shop around in the Dremel section.
Going to look at some "dark gray discs & diamond discs" tomorrow.

I have a diamond wheel in about a 1 1/2" - 2" diameter, It works very well on balsa and thin lite ply. For 1/8" and heavier ply, I would not recommend a dremel type tool. I don't know if your power is compatible or if it would be feasable for you to order from Harbour Tools, but they have a mini table saw with a 4" blade for under $50 US and as low as $30 when on sale. It's cheap but it's $cheap too.

Hi!
A better way to cut dowels is by using an ordinary Zona saw!
For cutting holes in wood a carbide cutter/ router is perfect.
These are available from me if you want some. Saws you will find in every hobby shop.
Diamond wheel is from proxxon, cutting disks from Du-Bro and Dremel.
Regards!
