Default Post-glow clean up: What do you use?

I've been using Windex but is there something better to get rid of the castor oil residue on monokote? Maybe it's becuase I've got nice car now that I care more.

You're probably going to get as many different answers to this question as there are people out there. I use windshield washer fluid (cheap stuff, about a buck a gallon) and put Dawn dishwasing liquid in it. The mixture is cheap and the Dawn does a great job of cutting the oil on the plane.

that's my .02 cents worth

Hi! Best way to get rid of castor oil is to not use castor oil!
10%-15% all synthetic oil is just what we use over here in Europe...so why can't Americans get the oils we have???

We can. But some parts of the US are sub-tropical (i.e., high heat and humidity) and some castor in your fuel is the only sure way to prevent bearing rust.

I was going to start a post like this but I was more interested in finding out what type of clothes everybody is using. I use basically cotton type clothes....old undershirts, sweatpants, wash clothes, etc but they really get gummy quick.

After windex, I use Eagle 20/20 windshield cleaner. Takes all the haze off and makes it nice and new looking. For quick at the field cleaning of real oily messes I use Berryman's Carb and Choke cleaner. Works fine on film coverings, but NOT TO BE USED WITH PAINT!.

Hey John,

If you mean RC I fly in Burlington. If you mean for work I'm based in Newark NJ and commute from Seattle each week. (Long story, if we fly together we'll trade lies and explain.)

rcfiend: I fly in my shop clothes, wash them seperatley and junk them every year or so.

I flew 2 small electrics to get my fingers back up to speed after my 16 year r/c layoff, I'm already missing the ease of just quitting and throwing it all in the back of the car. But I also LOVE that 4 stroke sound....

Take care,
Steve

RC-FIEND I also use old cotton cloths for cleaning. When I get a pile I throw them in the washer.

My favorite cleaner is 80% winshield washer & 20% simple green.

I use a 50-50 blend of amonia and alcohol. The alcohol I use is Gas line anti=freeze (Heet) It is the cheapest high alcohol concentration I can find. It also makes a really great streak free glass cleaner.

Castor versus synthetic is not the issue. Even if you run all synthetic there's still going to be oil residue on the plane. We can get synthetic, but some of us choose to run some castor too. Whether castor is an old habit that dies hard, or has some value may be up for debate, but the fact is that either is going to leave gunk on the plane.

I use Simple Green. I got it at the local warehouse store (BJs). It came in a combo that included the spray bottle, gallon refill, and some waterless hand cleaner. I keep the hand cleaner in the flight box too so I can get the slime off my hands before I get in the car. I also got a huge bundle of cheap cotton shop towels from BJs. I do as another suggested, use up a bunch of them and then throw them in the washer.

I noticed. I guess he sells APC props too, I've seen him get quite passionate in one of the APC vs MAS threads.

I mostly use Windex type stuff, because of the handy spray bottles. Usually I add some methanol to it to help dissolve the oil a little better. I tried adding acetone once... it works very well, but the pump in your spray bottle doesn't like it. Also, straight acetone works very well on gas powered planes. The oil I use in gas engines doesn't dissolve in alcohols, so I can't clean up with my standard cleaning mix.

For cloths I normally use cotton: old (T) shirts work very well. Also, my sister supplies me with a virtually unlimited supply of these green cotton cloths they use for surgery in the hospital... they work very well. Once they open the pack and it isn't sterile anymore they have to throw away the left over cloths... I figure I can put 'em to good use instead of letting 'em disappear into the bin.

JAKA is right about the synthetic oil though. It is a little easier to clean up, especially in cold weather when processed castor turns into this thick messy goo... A little synthetic also goes a long way in keeping your engines clean... no need for a crock pot when using synthetic!
For normal sport engines and four strokes I use synthetic exclusively (Fuchs Aerosave)... no problems what so ever, not even rust.

Lemon Pledge. Cuts the goop, leaves a nice shine, and the car smells good.

Seems to take a long time though. I have a couple od 20+year old planes that may be a bit brittle, but I don't know if that is due to the ammonia or just age. I suppose I could make a side by side comparison over the next 20 years. Stay tuned

I generally use Klotz oil - synthetic with a dash of castor. For after flight cleaneing I carry a cheap trigger-spray bottle with a mix of water, a good dash of 'Tiger Red' (a commercial grease-cutting material used for motel floor cleaning here), and a couple of squirts of good dishwash detergent.

Works fine for me.

Wipe all oil accumulations off the plane first. Use as many paper towels as necessary.

Use a good-quality streakless glass cleaner (commercial or home-made).

Gets the model 'squeaky clean!'
