new panther takes to the skies
as some of you know dan gill and i have been working on a 1/5.75 scale panther. well dan did most of the work, anyway. the maiden was this weekend. she was flown without incident both 7/3 and 7/4. take offs were smooth and landings were like landing an uglystick. very rock solid. dan is starting up a small business to market this jet and he should have an add running here on rcu in a few weeks. the next step is to have all the parts cut at the lazer cutter and build a second model to test the fit of the parts. here are a few pics of the panther, also, pics with the panther side by side with gregg and paul binghams yellow f18. the f18 is the bigger yellow kit. the panther has a wingspan of 80 inches. as soon as sean can come over and show how to download video, we have several flights on video. take care, barry

RE: new panther takes to skies
the panther was flown with a p120. however, having said that, this panther was ready to fly in less than 3 weeks out of the mold. there were several evenings, due to work, that i was unable to work on her. dan sean and kevin and myself had a thrash party saturday to be able to test fly her sunday. time was tight and we did not have time to get the gear doors on her. having said that, the panther was never flown over half throttle, take off was at full throttle but after flaps were in neutral the throttle was pulled back to half. the gear door openings were huge and would have put a lot of air through the fuse, so throttle manegement was important here or at least we felt like we should not push it. the plane was rock steady in flight. the airframe weighs 14 lbs unrigged and 34 lbs dry. 2 1/2 pounds of lead was added to the nose to balance. this is common in a panther with the turbine aft of the cg. dan got the turbine as for forward as possible, knowing this is an issue. the next panther will be lazer cut with lightening holes added in the bulkheads to assist in the balncing of the model. also, the ecu pack can be put all the way in the tip of the nose. it was placed over the nose gear for fear of the plug wire not being long enough to reach the ecu. after she was completely rigged and the ecu was placed the cord was plenty long enough to move the battery to the nose. it just was not done before the test flight because time was getting tight. we were a pair of proud papas to see her fly without a hitch. the turbine was test run at my house before heading to the airport, so when we arrived to test fly her, the charges were topped off, fueled up, range checked, and flown. barry

As Barry mentioned I was there to see the panther get its final rigging. For the prototype I must say that many things were very much thought out. Much detail on location and mounts for all items. Their fuel tank will be a must purchase as it fits beautifully on CG. Room for smoke and cockpit galore.
There are only some minor changes that they are going to make on the production kit and I must say this will be a winner.
It is one I will be adding to my collection as well.
Great job Dan and Barry.

a point to add....barry has also tested the elevators as a gust of wind blew over a 33%`s wing bags ( with wings inside ) over on to the elevators and the plane didnt move...its built rock solid and extremely well thought out....personally after that i wanted to sit on them but barry said no!!!..
another item discussed was the removeable tail ( for easier transport ) and have a second twin boomed tail and call it a panther cat ( it is very possible to do )
anyway the plane flew great and landed like a kitten...not to mention left the ground on take off like a kingcat`s rollout ( aka short )
we are in line to get one and cant wait
oppps...also it sounded 1950 ish....as the gear doors werent installed yet....barry i know that sound will leave when you intall them ..but it sounded really cool
