Depending on the type of gear setup you have, there are lots of ways.

Can you post a pic, or describe the gear?

SIG makes wheel pant brackets. They fasten to the inside of the wheel pant and clamp onto the axle.

I have used them on several planes, I fly off a grass field and they held the pants right where they were supposed to be.

regardless of the axle.......I glue a plywood plate in the pant

I then drill a hole in the pant and plate the size of the hex on the axle (outside hex). I don't drill the whole too low. I want there to be a hole in the pant so that the axle hex rests on the whole and there is meat below it with both pant and plywood.

Then I prop the plane level and make the wheel pant look level to the plane (while its on). I then make my small marks for the 4/40 screws. Then test fit before i drill the last holes that the back of the pant won't scrape the ground during taxi.

Lastly I put a small piece of fuel tube betwwen the pant and gear on the 4/40 screw to dampen vibration.

Never had a wheel pant come off with this method.

Hi Will that method work on the 5/32" landing gear.. What holds the pant to gear.. Looks like the 4/440 screws go to the pant and not the gear?I just finished a plane with metal main gear, and it had to small holes for the 4/40 screws..That held it to the gear..

Thanks Dan

I do about the same as Minn's rockin' graphic, but I like to put another piece of airply at the axle end, inside the pant, for extra support.

Hi Guys Well I got the wheel pants on my new Bingo.. That was pretty much an easy one, since the landing gear had 2 small holes for the 4/40 screws.. All I had to do was mount a 1/8 ply plate on the pants.

Now I would like to try and mount them on Cloud Dancer which has the gear coming out from the wings and is 5/32.. Still can't picture what you were saying about mounting them.

Thanks Dan

Mini's diagram is about right.

what you can't see is that below the 4/40 screw, on the axle

My wheel pants rest on the axle, I don't knotch out the wheel pant. This way you get more meet on those rough landings, also helps from loosening due to vibration.

And as for mounting to the gear......The diagram shows it.....drill a hole through the gear and the wheel pant with a blind nut in the wheel pant. I place the fuel tube between the gear and wheelpant to vibration dampen and it tends to help keep the paint from rubbing off

Here is my method that has worked great for me. Easy on and off just one bolt holds the wheel pant and wheel.

Hey guys your missing the boat on this one. He has 5/32 dia. wire gear and has nothing to drill thru for a screw.
My only idea is to glue a ply plate inside the pant and then use a nylon strap on the outside to hold it all together.

He did state 5/32, but we could only assume he meant the axle. If he does indeed have 5/32 LANDING GEAR, then I'm afraid wheel pants are out of the question.

Deadeye
He states 5/32 coming out of the wing, that says 5/32 dia. wing mounted gear to me.
I've had two planes with wire gear and wheel pants so I don't see how you can say this is out of the question.
GB Super Chipmonk & Herr 1/2A Pitts Special. What about GP Super Sportster, Wing mounted gear and pants, but I don't know how those are mounted.

Hey Dan - You'll need to use an external strap of some sort to mount wheel pants to your wire LG. I think something like these will do:

You'll obviously need much shorter screws or bolts. You still might want to reinforce the wheel pants with thin ply or similar material glued to the inside.

Maybe this would work --- designed to mount on 5/32 axle --- but maybe could be soldered or use wheel collars to secure since landing gear wire is 5/32??

Just a thought....

mimhoff has a link to the brackets I was referring to. Epoxy a 1/8" lite ply plate inside the pants, then bolt the brackets to the plate. The brackets go around the axle and you tighten a 4-40 screw to clamp them in place. I fly off a grass field with setup and have no problems at all with the pants shifting.

Hi Guys Thanks for all the replies..The gear is 5/32 wire.. Here's what I'm going to try.
Solder a 5/32 wheel collor on a 1x2 brass plate and drill 2 small holes in plate. The small holes will be small sheet metal screws.. Should work?

I once did order the Sullivan brackets, but gave up on them..
Thanks Again Dan

PS Keep the idea's coming
