Gear door hinge installation?
O.K., I feel like a real dumb a--, but how do you install gear door hinges? I bought some of these nylon hinges, which I think are worthless. I made a nose gear door with a lip and tried fitting these nylon things. After damn near ruining my door, I've decided they are not 'deep' enough or something. Seems like no matter which way I move them, the door won't open. The door is about 2" wide and 7" long with a raised part inside and about a 1/8th lip around the outside. Seems like there must be some rule of thumb here or you'd tear up your doors tack gluing 10 times. Signed, Frustrated in TN!

If you're talking about something like the Robart #350 door hinge found at http://www.robart.com/Hinge.aspx (scroll down the page), you need to get the correct 'scale', or make your own.

To get the hinges to work properly the hinge line has to be on the split line of the gear door. In the photo it is about 1/16" off.

If you have installed them like the picture, they are backwards. The small part goes on the fuselage and the large part on the door.

Think I got it. The balsa represents the fuse and the little piece will be a 'stringer' between bulkheads. The 'U' needs a little more grinding to allow the door to swing completely down. The gap between the door and 'fuse' can be slightly smaller to allow the door to open. There are probably other ways of doing this.
