Stuck in the middle.
Well I Have a Saito 180 and 3 Hitec 5645's and 2 Hitec 5625's.
I'm between the 65" Yak and the GS Edge. I like the edge because everyone sais its so stable, but what I'm worried about is I can be the best pilot i the world but If I flameout with it 2 feet off the ground, yall said its not real sturdy and I'm afraid it'll snap and then I have to cut grass to earn another $330. On the other hand some guy said he had a low flatspin and pancaked the 65" yak and broke the prop and bent the gear. That one sounds tuff. I hear about alot of 65" yaks with YS 120's and the 120's or the same weight as the Saito 180's.
Please give me a reason t pick either one.
Thanks

RE: Stuck in the middle.
O.S. .91 FX w/ muffler = 24.3 .oz
Saito 180 w/o muffler = 31 .oz
So I'lls guess 180 w/ muffler =35 .oz ???
I heard a few guys using Saito 180's and a few guys runing OS 120's / YS 120's and all the 120's and 180's weigh the same.

RE: Stuck in the middle.
So it's 11 oz more lets say.
That means you need to put batter in tail, not a problem but it's got to be below the tail servos.
If it was me ... I'd put it on the 65" Yak. Weight shifting profiles is easy.
I'm sure others will say differnt. But I like them overpowered. Also 65" Yak has best wing loading then any plane we have. The extra 11 won't kill it.

RE: Stuck in the middle.
Thats what I'm suffering over. I want a light wing loading. I like being on the lowe side of the claimed weights for any given ARF. Although the muffler on the 180 is pretty small. it might ne like 33 oz. I'm not sure.
I think I'll end up going with the 65" Yak. I figure... Everybody loves them, If I really don't like it it shouldn't be too hard to get off my hands. Any other advice or reason why I should get the Yak.
One more thing, Is there any GOOD video of the 65" Yak I'v seen the RCU review one. any others.
Thanks

RE: Stuck in the middle.
There's some video on the OMP website. Yes there have some 65 yaks with 180's and the two I know swear it's a great combo. Lot's of good setups with the 120s as well which are the same rough weight. The Saito 180 is one of the listed engines for the giant profiles though and I guess my view as the designer is that's what the 80" Edge is for. My answer to crashing is simply "don't crash". The Edge would be a much better 3d trainer and the Yak with that engine would be an animal for sure. So best to decide what you want to use the plane for and go from there.

RE: Stuck in the middle.
Yea I like the big edge, but its so an extra $100 bucks and i can loose it to a flame-out just liek that. Although I could walk outside and get hit by a bus so...... I guess I ahve so more research to do. I like flying the GS edge on the Sim and I can hover it hands off almost. Get it locked in and go get a sandwhich ya know. We'll see. If I can pick up a used Yak I can check it out and if I don't like it selll it.
If the Edge was as durable as the Yak I'd hae one right now, but you can't win em all.
Thanks again

RE: Stuck in the middle.
Hey Fasterthanlife:
I've got a 65" yak that I built from a kit. It's got a YS 120 FZ in it swinging a 17-6 APC. This thing is an animal to say the least. I'm sure with the SA 180 it will be even better. I do have a few oz. of lead in the tail however. But the plane floats like crazy and the YS don't talk back about it either.
I might have been the person you were refering too "as pancaking it hard". I did and she hit hard. Broke the prop. landing gear, counterballance on elev., and one of the wing tabs came loose. I fixxed that and went back at it again. Was really low hovering and just having fun, when I pulled instead of pushed, got flustered and ended up doing a dang good cartwheel. I just broke a wing tab off that time. This thing is nuts tufffffff..........
I believe I'll be posting some dead weight around here on ebay. And OMP will be getting an order from me for a Yak ARF. I don't think I can live with out one in my hanger. I was a tad intimidated by it at first but now it's the first plane in the air for me. It's great to fly normally, loops, rolls, etc. But turn the rates up and she's a beast.

RE: Stuck in the middle.
Ya see now I'm leaning back and forth. I think a GS edge would be cool for a huge Wow afctor but I'd aslo be running the 180 @ a high throttle setting, therefore more gas usage....
The Yak looks like a fun tough sporty little plane? Would this plane be more stable/ easier to hover than say a UCD 60? How about the Kat 40.
Thanks

RE: Stuck in the middle.
Just do the Yak for God's sake man.
The UCD is uglier than hell. I've got 2 mojo 60s and a 65" yak. Everyone raves about the Mojo's. They're awesome planes, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't leave home without em. But I won't leave home without the Yak either. It flies so true and stable.
Tell ya what. You get the Yak. If ya don't like it, I'll buy it from ya for a decent price. If ya put it on RCU it'd disapear.

You will like the Yak a lot. The UCD will be an after thought. You'll be like " A UCD WHAT!!!!" Yeah. that thing is ugly. Please do something with it, like let the dog chew on it or burn it, etc. errrr
