AM or FM?
hey, I'm looking at buying a kit, and atm i have the radio gear, with servo's.. but its AM.
However, I'm looking at buying a metal geared steering servo, will it work with either AM or FM, or will i need to buy some FM gear?
Also, whats the difference between AM and FM, does FM have quicker responses or soemthing?
Thanks

RE: AM or FM?
FM has greater range and you're less likely to have conflicts with kiddie RC toy frequency. Whether a servo is metal gear or nylon doesn't matter regarding radio type (however if you go into FM HRS must use digital) You can digital servos with PCM FM or HRS FM.
Dunno about response, don't think it matters considering the speed of RC cars (compared to planes)
IMO I would look for a receiver with built in failsafe (reception and battery level) as it saves buying a seperate failsafe (and the cheaper ones don't have low battery failsafe anyway)
I would not buy a AM radio set for a expensive RC car.

RE: AM or FM?
cool, thanks for the info.
with my current gear i just use a seperate fail safe, and also have a VSM, which has an inbuilt voltmeter, so i can check how much power is left before using it.

If you want to really upgrade your radio, then look at one of the 2.4Ghz systems.
You can go 2.4Ghz in 3 different ways
1: Get a modular Radio and a Spektrum Module for it, you can get modular radios from most makes.
2: Get the Spectrum DX3, 3 channel system, price aprox US$ 250
3: Get the Nomad Sensor (http://www.nomadio.net) 3 channel system with Real Time Telemetry(Temp and Battery, speed comming soon)
The Spectrum DX3 way is he cheapest, the Nomad Sensor the most advanced for know, and as I have the Sensor I can heartily recommend that.
In the Car Radio section you can find long threads discussing all three systems.

RE: AM or FM?
keep in mind, I'm only a basher, so i don;t need really good gear.
Also, anyone know a good "novice" kit, I have owned nitro cars and trucks in the past, and have had no troubles, pulling them apart and putting them back together.
I'm looking at buying a 1/10 monster truck kit, anyone know any good ones?

RE: AM or FM?
The advantage of the 2.4Ghz systems is that they find a free channel automatically.
No more worries that someone turns on a radio on the same channel that you are running on, and then your car is scrap.
No problems having to check all the other bashers frequensies, and then open the car and change the channel on the Synth systems, or the X-Stal on X-Stal based systems.
I am also only a Basher, and never expect to be more, also at the moment there is only one other 1/6 scale FG buggy inside 1000 km from me...
There is several Nitro bashers, but not enough for free channels really to be a problem.....
I just wanted to try a Real Fancy system, and choose the Nomad Sensor, a choice that I am very very happy with.
