So, I have a first gen RS4 Nitro that I ran here and there up until about 5 years ago when I boxed it up and moved, then never touched it. Now I have the time and space to play with cars again and I am going to drop a new body on it, tune it up and enjoy it. Now, I know that it is probably ancient in terms of cutting edge racing but I don't do anything other than fooling around in the parking lots. Other than getting the occasional pebble in the belt and having to clear it the car was always a great car and should still suit my needs. One thing that I have been thinking of is buying the 2 speed tranny kit, they seem to be available but it is really that much of a gain? I do enjoy that feature on my Tmaxx. Also, are parts for fist gen still available or is it totally unsupported?

The new RS4 nitro's are completely different.. engines have gone a lot farther also! You can still find parts for your car. With a 2-spd it drives faster and gets up to speed quicker. Look on ebay; even an old rusty 2-speed will do the job just fine. Don't know what engine you had, but getting a new engine like an OS 12CV-R ($90) or similar might be a big step up, especially if you had the ancient HPI .12e or .15fe. With a 2-speed, taller 2-speed gear set, OS .12 CV-R and a tuned pipe you could get up to 50mph and that's a heck of a lot better than 30mph stock.

It has the Nitro Star engine with the Orange label. Anyone have any idea what the specs are on this thing? I was looking at the Tower Hobbies .15 Ball Bearing ABC and it has a nice spec sheet and compares well to that O.S. I like O.S. engines but tower's products are mostly rebadges of good name products and I wonder who's engine it really is. I think it's the same price as the OS 12. I found several 2 speed trannys on Ebay and I just need to clean it up the car a bit and order a new body from tower. I want to order the engine at the same time so any input would be great. I figure the tranny, engine upgrade and a new body will make this a nice parking lot toy.

Tower's engines aren't that far ahead anymore; the only thing they can do well is lower the price. Their newer engine has .7hp and goes up to 31,000 rpm. Today's decent engines start at 1hp and 35,000 rpm. The engine in your car has a max hp of about .6 and an RPM rating no more than 30,000.

A good choice is the OS .12CV-R or CV-RX. OS CV-X's and CV's are not great.
