Default Crimping coated kevlar cable on TOC YAK

I have The Flame TOC yak and I have some heavy duty coated kevlar cable to do the pull pull with. (because the normal kevlar rubs against the wood and frays just a little)

How do you crimp wires like that. In the directions it says you are supposed to.

I have never done a pull pull setup before and this is my first gasser. How many crimps do you use and do you really need a crimping pliers? You heat shrink over the crimps right?

Thanks for the help, I need it!

I just finished the pull-pull on my 31% CA Extra, and used the cable setup from Don's Hobby Shop in Salina, KS. His kit includes several 3/4" aluminum sleeves to run the cable through a few times, and crimp. I use the crimp pliers that are for crimping electrical connectors. You can cover the crimp w/ heat shrink for cosmetic reasons, but I would rather be able to inspect the crimps from time to time.

I use the plastic coated stainless steel braided wires all the time for pull-pull. Just go to your local sporting goods shop and buy the proper sized ferrules for the size wire you are using. Crimp pliers work best but; in a pinch, I have used side cutters to crimp them successfully, just be sure to not squeeze to hard when crimping. I have never had a crimped joint fail in the 12 plus years I have been using them, far more reliable than a typical soldered joint.

I use coated kevlar from Dons Hobbies on my 35% Extra. Rather than crimp it, I just peel off 2 inches of the vinyl off the kevlar leaving the bare kevlar exposed. I then cut a 1 inch piece of shrink tubing and insert the bare kevlar, loop it twice around the eyelet and back into the shrink tubing. A bit of heat shrinks the tubing around the kevlar, and a few drops of CA fuses the bare kevlar onto itself inside the shrink tubing.

Trouble free after two years and hundreds of flights.
