Default RS380 Heatsink?

Do the two windows (where you can see the brushes) on a RS380 brushed motor have to be open or can they be covered? Reason I'm asking is because I got a GWS heatsink for speed 400 motors and it covers them up....It don't seem to be helping much and I was wondering if I should use a dremel and open the holes back up...
