Default best 1.60-sized aerobat?

Very subjective question I know, but I am an intermediate pilot looking to move up to first large plane and want to avoid going 50cc for now. I am looking for something 1.60-1/4 scale-ish to learn IMAC-type stuff on with some 3d potential. Forgiving nature and nice landings more important than top-notch aerobatic abilities. I currently have the small GP Cap580. Leaning towards a GP Soucy Extra, but also considering a H9 260, WH baby Edge, or even Goldberg Obsession (I have read the various threads on each of these). I also want to keep price down under $400. Any advice/experiences on these or other planes I should look at appreciated!

28,

I moved into IMAC crafts with a H9 Ultra Stick. 1.50 - 1.80 glows work well on it. I learned to torque roll and harrier with it while enjoying more forgiving flight characteristics. But that's just me. I just converted it to electric and found a whole new world of possibilities with a variable pitch prop.

I have a Soucy with an OS 1.60. Flys and lands great.

Thanks - I haven't heard one bad thing about the Soucy, and a good price too at <$300. Tough to beat it seems.

I owned a Chip Hyde Capx and it was a very fun plane. The 3D was good and landings were simple, but I am not sure how precise it would be for Imac type stuff. Maybe take a look at the WildHare 1.20 Edge. All of their products are top notch.

I'm hearing good things about the Ultra R/C 29% Giles 202 76" wingspan. Seems the 1.60 is the ticket for this combo and is under 11 pounds. Built by the same factory as the EF 87" Yak and the QQ 85" Yak. I have one I just started working on, so can't truly testify to actual performance. There is a thread in the 3D forum.

I enjoy my Great Planes 1/4-scale Giles 202/O.S. 1.60FX; $220 for the Giles at Tower.

Good luck with your choice,

Some folks like bigger engines in them but a Dave Patrick Edge is hard to beat. 160 will hover with a slow pull out but all other maneuvers are locked on. A little over 400 though.

I to can vouch for the Soucy GP extra. Its a really well put together plane built more like a kit type plane than an ARF. Therefore its a little heavier than the current offering in Hi perfomance 1.20 size ARF,s its a great plane for someone moving up to the larger planes as it will tolerate some pretty sloppy landings, believe I know. thx Dave

World Models has a good selection on 1.60 size airplanes. I know several of them and they are all well built and very reliable ARF'S. There are several positive reviews on them. The EXTRA 300s 160 is an awesome flying airplane check out the review on RCuniverse under reviews. It is one of my favourite airplanes to fly i have a OS 1.60 installed in it and it is a awesome combo.

Wildhare Edge 1.20.. Supposedly great with an O.S. 160 or similar engine..

I have heard good things about the DP Edge with a big Moki as well..

I personally didn't like my Giles 202 R.I.P.

e28m5,

Don't overlook the Goldberg Sukhoi. I have this one flying with a Laser 150; the OS 1.60 would be excellent on this airframe.

Like you, I'm getting into the bigger planes but not ready for gas just yet. I have the H9 Extra about half-way built, and the WH 73" Edge in the box waiting its turn. Both are good quality and excellent values for the dollar spent. WH is out of the "baby" Edge right now, I hear.

There is a ton of planes in this size to choose from. I went back and forth between the WH Edge and the H9 Extra, and ended up with both.

The SIG Cap and Extra are nice planes as well. Have/had both. Yellow aircraft had some quality 1/4 sclae planes too. I have the Cap and Sukhoi NIB as well as the GP G-202. Just wish I had the time to put them all together! May sell these though as I have some bigger planes to do as well.
