Default Rough paint and clear coat

I am painting a plane with Dupli-color which is an acrylic laquer. Most of the colors have produced a nice glossy smooth finish. I used a white for some sections and it produced a fairly rough low gloss finish. The paint coverage is good, but the finish needs help. I plan on clear coating the whole plane. The questions, will 600 grit wet sand smooth the paint without dulling or removing too much paint, what could have went wrong, and after sanding will the paint look good under the clear?

I can't answer all your questions. However you can sand the paint and leave it dull. Then clear it and the clear will leave the gloss. The clear is available in gloss or matt finish. It's like painting the inside of a canopy or RC car body. You can use cheap dull paint and the clear body makes it shine.

I had the same problem recently painting rustoleum spray and overcoating with PU. I think it is caused by the paint being sprayed too far from target and some of carrier starts to dry before the rest. Especially with lacquer based products, this can be a problem. I used 0000 steel wool and smoothed out the overcoat of PU and all was fine, but I was looking for a matte finish.

Auto paint store, get 1500 or 2000 grit. works great.
