Christmas Present for 7 Year old Boy (What RC Car?)
We have in the past bought my son R/C cars for christmas but they have all been the WalMar POS R/C's. They last for a few days and then brake and you can't get replacement parts so they end up in the garbage. I am wondering what would be a good Off Road car, buggie or Truck to get him this year for christmas. One that has replaceable parts, Electric I am thinking cause of age and is of decent quality. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Also one that is RTR would be nice also.

RE: Christmas Present for 7 Year old Boy (What RC Car?)
Since you are in Lancaster, there is a Hobby People nearby right? (All my prices below are straight from the Hobby People website)
7 years old... Now, here is a blast from the past and nostalgia for you (if were into RC in the 80s-90s), and a great running Hobby truck for him! It's not RTR, but you could have fun building it with/for him. I would get my son one of these two if he was 7... My boys are gonna be hooked up when they are older, just because I am such a nut about the hobby!
LUNCHBOX! Cost is $90 at Hobby People with engine/speed control, then you need a 2 ch AM radio, 7.2V battery and charger. You can get a Hitec Agressor Pistol Radio w/2 servos for $50, that's $140 and as cheap as an RTR! Then an Epic 1500mAh 7.2V sport pack for $10, and a simple Promax AC charger for $25. $175 total.
GRASSHOPPER! Cost is $80 at Hobby People with engine/speed control, then you need a 2 ch AM radio, 7.2V batter and charger. You can get a Hitec Agressor Pistol Radio w/2 servos for $50, that's $130 and as cheap as an RTR! Then an Epic 1500mAh 7.2V sport pack for $10, and a simple Promax AC charger for $25. $165 total.

You can get one of these, they are fairly common used and have a good range of spare parts.
Traxxas Bandit RTR w/Radio & ESC : $139.99
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXJJF9**&P=0
Traxxas Rustler RTR w/Radio & ESC: $144.99
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXVK74**&P=0
Traxxas Stampede RTR w/Radio & ESC: $157.99
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXVK75**&P=0
DuraTrax Evader EP BX w/ESC RTR: $159.99
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXXJ48**&P=0
DuraTrax Evader EP ST w/ESC RTR: $169.99
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXXJ49**&P=0
These are all a pretty big step up from the Wallmart cars, but still the price is acceptable.
The Bandit and Rustler - more or less the same car, Rustler - ultra strong and duable
The Evader BX and Evader ST - more or less the same car, great guarantee on plastic parts, a little faster then the Traxxas conterparts.
The Stampede - a very popular Monster Truck.
All you need for these cars to roll out is a charger and batteries!?

gwt him a traxxas or duratrax. they have many electric rtr's and at a cheap price. when he gets older he could probably convert it to nitro and have real fun. id say the best for him would be the evader or the rustler. they have alot of parts for it. there really reliable. i have revo, its alot stronger than most electric. ive heard evaders are good. revos cost 470 dollars though and its nitro. the best bet u could get for him would be a rustler, evader, or e-maxx(30mph e-maxx). good luck choosing one for him.

The wall-mart toys that u bought him were they mostly onroad or offroad?
If offroad I would go with the Traxxas Stampede with ESC
If onroad I dont know what to go with besides the 4-tec!

Stampede would be a good one...
Can't believe you guys aren't supporting my 'retro' push. Gotta teach the young ones about our 'past' as well as the present. How cool would it be to run a brand new grasshopper again?

RE: Christmas Present for 7 Year old Boy (What RC Car?)
sorry, but their is no way I'd buy one of those old tamiya's. I wasn't around then so they mean nothing to me. I have a stampede, and do recomend it. The main problem I had with it was the plastic motor mount. The motor slipped away from the spur and stripped it. I ended up bolting a cut up B4 aluminum mount on it. The problem dissapeared. If you are thinking about the stamped, check out Traxxas' site and stamped community on their site.

How good is he at driving?
If he is semi-proficient, get him a Duratrax Evader PRO ARR from towerhobbies. They are on sale for $99, but you will need your own ESC, motor and radio.
If you just want to bash around, a Traxxas stampede is a good choice. They are moderately slow (15MPH) and are VERY tough.

ORIGINAL: Dale Gribble
They were the best for their time... They can't hold a candle to todays materials and processes. I still like em tho!
