RE: need help how can you know if the esc is toast
The ESC does two things, in addition to controlling the voltage it outputs a fixed voltage to the receiver and servos in place of the battery used in a nitro. If your servos are acting wacko with that ESC it's probably blown a FET to a closed short. Not much you can do (unless you are good at soldering and can locate the blown part) just get a new ESC and make sure its turn limit is well under the number of turns you intend to run. I remember when I tried running a 19-turn stock class motor on a stock ESC claimed rating down to 16 turns, not only was it not giving me the full power of the 19-turn, the ESC started to smoke and caught fire while accelerating several minutes into the first run. I replaced it with an aftermarket 13-turn rated ESC and it's been rock-solid reliable since then, in addition to getting the performance I expected to out of that motor.
