Default CA hinges and probond

Has anyone ever tried using a polyurethane glue with CA hinges rather than CA?

Just curious, looking for options.
Thanks

I have not tried and I do not think I would try. Polyurethane glues expand alot while drying. How do you plan to get it in the hinge slot and then put the hinge in? What is wrong with CA?

CA hinges and probond
Wouldn't be prudent!!!!!

CA a hinges work because of the wicking action of thin CA and the material the hinge is made from. the Ca wicks into the slot cut in the balsa and saturates the hinge material causing it to bond to the wood

BTW do not substitute medium or thick CA either... (Guess how I know :stupid: )

If you don't want to use CA try Hinge points or pinned hinges with epoxy

Default CA Hinges

You know, the problem I sometimes see with CA hinges is they don't always wick out the CA to full depth no matter how many drops you put on them.

I haven't tried it, but the thought occurs that you could fully wet out a CA hinge with Probond in a thin layer, mist it with water, assemble the parts and have time to get every thing aligned right, tape it all down and stand back. Might be worth a trial joint with a hinge or two. Drawback might be seeing it foam up into the hinge line. Of course it will foam up into the wood too, all the way through.

Probond works great on hinge points. Even if it foams out the hole a little, it trims away easy with a razor blade.

Anyway, just a thought.

Drill a small hole in the middle of the slot that is the same depth or close to it and apply the CA there.

Believe me I didn't think CA hinges were any good at first

Try this on a scrap 1/4/x 1/2 piece of balsa then pull the hinge out with a pair of pliers if you've done it correctly you will get as much wood as hinge

Thanks for the info everyone.

Have any of you used CA hinges on a 33% or larger plane?
