Hey Josey,

Your throws could very well be the difference. I've found that I really don't care for the massive throws now a days. I've probably got 30 deg or so on ailerons and 40 degrees on elevators.... Bound to make a difference in current drawn.
Thats what Im thinking..It took a while to get used to 70deg elevator throw but man does it do wicked tumbles!! Im gonna check my math again next time I fly..its possible I miscalculated

I bet you're right on the tumbles! It seems like when I TRY to do waterfalls I'm a little short on elevator throw. Everything else seems pretty good.

don't think 6v is needed anymore with new 8611a
Youre missing the point. Its not only about torque, with 4.8V and a weak (high internal resistance)battery your voltage could very well drop below the recievers needs, you crash and wonder why those blasted servos locked up, yet when you check it they all test fine and your battery is fine 2.
The older nimhs are not able to stand much current draw hence they have been bashed by Nicad users. This is changing as the newer ones come on line.
All you need to do is put a 1650 on a tester and wack some amps out of it to see what I mean or as I did, an onboard data logger.
If youre bound and determined to use the weaker batteries ( and its not capacity I mean by weaker) then you need to run two.

RCPilet,

I have been down this same road.

One 2400 Li-Ion + switch & regulator is the lightest setup but may be marginal or inadaquate current for 5-7 8611's or 9555tg's. (each of these digital servos can draw over a amp & one 2400 Li-Ion is good for 4 amps)
Two 2400 li-Ions + switches + regulators has all the nessessary current but now doubles the weight & cost (of course you can fly twice as many flights)
One 1950 Nihm + switch can provide siginificantly more current for the the digital servos only weighs an oz more than a single 2400 Li-Ion set up but you now need to field charge every forth or fifth flight.
The new Li-ion's comming out look a little better as far as internal resistance (so you don't need to use 4800 ma to get adaquate current).
You might want to check into those or look at Lipo's if you're willing to adopt new techonology.

Right now if you don't mind recharging after 4-5 flights, a single 1950 Nihm is the lightest and least expensive set-up for 5-7 high end digital servos. If you were at 7-9 servos, I would go with the twin 2400 Li-Ions.

My latest model is setup for --14 friggen servos ! NFW
it is a big Extra by Radiocraft
needless to say - I am pulling all of this setup out and going with fewer servos - JR 8611A's as needed.
for battery power -- back to NIMH -but the newest big high energy packs - check Cheap Battery Packs and read the specs --

Cool Dick, my 41% comp arf yak has 14 8611's in it plus a digital throttle servo, it adds up fast doesnt it!! I run two Fromeco 4800 LiIons in this one, one per rx. Have fun!

I recently purchased some NoBS Sanyo 3200 NiMh batteries for my Rx battery. I have a standard JR 150ma wall wart and a Ace Digipace III 140ma charger. Will either be enough to form charge the batteries or should I purchase a higher ma charger?

Regards,

Steve

I would give JR 150 mA wall wart a try, it should work. Charge it for 30 hrs and cycle it and see what you come up with. You're not going to hurt anything trying it. I can charge my 1950 NiMh battery with a charger that puts out 75 mA.

I will trickle/slow charge but also hit it with 1c now and then to keep packs healthy and strong. 3200 pack means a charge rate of 3.2 amps. pack will get warm at this fast charge rate just be careful not to overcharge. I overide the auto setting on my shultze but it still turns off automatically at full charge. most batt companies and chargers warn against charging at below recommended rates for prolonged period of time will weaken batts performance and reduce overall life.

Go easy Ray -- some batts larger than 2000 ma still require way less than 2 amps -
The latest and best cells do have extrmely low impedance and work well on high rates but there is still a sh-it pot full of NIMH out there that just get too hot nad false peak at higher rates.

I just remembered I have a Robbe Infinity 2 charger. I can fast charge the 6v 3200ma pack at 1C very easily. It also has a 250ma constant current output on the second output. I should be able to use this port to form charge the battery. If my math is correct, it looks looks like 18 hours should do the trick at 250ma.

Regards,

Steve

The 250 mA rate would be just right for your C/10 formation charges.......math is correct.

ok but I would not use a pack that can not be routinely charged/discharged at 1c for giant scale - only cells I have found in sub c are sanyo 2400 and some 1800 brands, they don't have as good da shelve life as others but poor out the power like edison. I top them off at 1c before the first flight of day.
