Down here in Texas it was well over a 100 deg. today when I foolishly decided to wring out my over-engined, tightly cowled Harmon Rocket with a few speed runs. She was really screaming on the third pass when I noticed a strange color smoke and it was getting worse rapidly. I quickly brought her in deadstick and this is what I found. The fiberglass cowl was scorched and charred and was just about on fire! Holy Smokes! I've never seen this before. I guess I'll put this one up for awhile till it cools off.
Sorry about the pic quality as I used my camera phone.

Yes it's from the muffler. Upon closer inspection it looks like fire was coming out the exhaust pipe as this is where the direct charring occured. I've never experienced this so not real sure what happened.

A little post mortem investigation showed that the cowling was indeed on fire as the firewall in that area was charred also on the inside. The strange thing is the oracover only burned in a very localized area. I'll have her patched up soon I think. I was flying with a silicone extension tube on the muffler but who knows at what point that let go.
