Default Putting second battery in for landing gear help.

Alright, I know nothing about airplanes so I apologize in advance. I am trying to help this guy I work with with his Zero. I need someone to send me a link to a thread or website that shows him how to put on a second battery for the landing gear. I have looked through the forum with no luck and I figured this would be faster. Thanks alot.

....Welcome to R/C Universe....[sm=thumbup.gif]

You can add a second battery to any application. The best way is to use a
second switch too, then you have a double safe system. Many a plane has
been lost because of a switch or battery failure. You hook the second battery
to the switch, then plug the switch into any open servo/slot on the receiver.

Normally there is only one place to plug the battery on a receiver, but what
they don't tell you, is you can plug the battery into any of the slots, and it will
work the same.

The plus (red/hot) and the ground (black) all use a "parallel" systm throughout
the battery and servo's on the receiver plugs.

See this 8 channel receiver ? The slot for #8 servo can be used for
the battery swich, or a servo....it is marked 8/B.

In the second picture it shows how a switch/battery can be plugged into
any slot.

When you put the power to the receiver, it doesn't where you put it,
it always powers everything. The black and the red wires are constant
through the system, the third wire for the servo's tells the servo which
direction to move, and how far to move.

I beleive what he wants to do is power the retract servo with a seperate power source, not create a power redundancy system.
If that is the case, you need another battery, switch and a new servo plug. Remove the positive (red) wire from the retract servo plug. Place it in the new servo plug (we will call this #2) at its normal location. Then plug the retract servo back into the reciever. Now install the battery and a seperate switch. Attach the battery to the switch in the normal fashion. Attach a new ground wire to the extra plug(#2) with the red wire, and splice it to the black wire on the retract servo lead. Now plug the new plug(#2) into the switch harness. The retracts are now powered with a seperate battery. Turn on BOTH switches to fly. Charge both in a normal fashion.

Terry....

....no mater where he plugs it in, it still ends up the same. If he adds power
to the retract servo, it will still run back to the reciever, and to the rest of
the servos as well.....so in fact, it does end up as a redundant system.

Not if the red (+) wire from the servo is not attached to the receiver, and runs to the extra battery, and the extra battery is not plugged to the receiver.

....'yer right.

I don't really see the point, though. The retract servo only works for a few
seconds....once at the beginning, and again at the end of the flight. It's not
like it's draining the battery. The other servo's, moving constantly....would
use many, many times the power of the retract servo in a 10 minute flight.

Draw that out for us.
If retracts hang up at a partial open or close, or are not adjusted correctly, they will continue draw power. Often if a strut gets bent a small amount on landing, & not noticed before the next flight, the gear will not retract completely into the well. Just a saftey precaution.
Personly, I prefer air retracts, but that's not always an option.

Here's my sketch, sorta
