Hi!
Where do I get K2R spot remover in the US?
Over here in Sweden K2R is banned because of being cancerogenic.
But there is nothing that beats it when it comes to removing oil from balsa fuselages.
Regards!

RE: K2R
Try mixing cornstarch and methanol into a paste. Brush it on, it will work but not as well as KR2. It may take a few applications.
Also KR2 may have changed

I have used this idea for years to get oil out of balsa wood. First off break out the monokote iron and turn it up all the way. Sprinkle on an even layer of baking soda. The kind you use with CA glue to fill small gaps. Then cut out a peice of brown paper bag a few inches wider all the way around the area you are working on. ( the type of Brown paper bag from the grocery) place it over the area covered with the baking soda. Paper towels will work also, but I perfer the paper bag,. Slowly move the iron back and forth for a few minutes. You may hear the sizzling of the oil, thats a good thing. You need to get it really hot to draw the oil out of the wood. The baking soda will absorb the oil as it is being drawn out of the wood. This may need to be repeated 2-3 time depending on the oil content in the wood. Let it cool and give it a light sanding. Give it a shot.
Good luck

If you need to get monokote or other film to stick to oil soaked wood, i've had some luck with the hot iron, baking soda route, followed by a couple of coats of balsarite. It sure helps get the monokote stuck back down.

After removing all the oil you can get out of the wood, I've had good luck applying a thin coat of CYA before painting or covering. The CYA seems to solidify things nicely and form a barrier. Use the clear peel-off material from film covering to quickly spread the thin layer of CYA, as the CYA doesn't stick to it.

Upon using a SEARCH ENGINE ;
I found the following links in half a heart beat;
http://www.k2rbrands.com/
http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/store/clearance.shtml
I've purchased from the latter in the past.
A couple of links to alternative techniques....
