Here is the latest on the stab update. I installed a 3/8 plate inset into the root for the anti rotation pin to go through then place the 1/8" root plate with the "ears" onto the foam. The sheeting will overlay over the root/plate for a nice clean edge.

The wings are going to be done similarly, the 1/4" balsa plate will be glued onto the foam before the sheeting to make a cleaner stronger joint. Therefore before the sheeting takes place you must make sure the tube is epoxied in so there is nice clean fit between the fuse and the foam. Also you want to make sure that the wings are level with the stabs.

Should fly great, and the tail aint going anywhere....[>:]

My other comment to the guy building this particular 40% Extra, is be very careful about putting your rudder servos in the tail. The airplane is going to be hard to balance. I have my rudder servos just aft of the motor box, all my radio and battery equipment forward, and two 8611's in the stabs and I have my batteries in the forward part of the motor box. You might have hard time balancing the airplane set-up that way. This has been the case with both of my 40% Extra's.

Good Luck and enjoy the build.

Pete

Us Indiana boys are mounting the rudder servo's in the tail on all the Carden Extra's. 35's and 40's..None have had a balance issue. Seen a problem with balance once doing this on a 40% 540. "Extra's" all in the tail. Waynes plane we didn't even check, we put it up and its real close as is. Walt

Mine is built stock with dual 8611's per stab half and everything is in the motorbox to get it to balance. Just telling you my experience. I used an SWB self adjusting tray mounted just aft of the motorbox and it works great. If I had mounted the servos for the rudder in the tail I would have had to add a considerable amount of weight to get it to balance. And not only that whoever is doing this build is adding those ply plates to the root of the stab. That might be a wash however with weight when you pull out the L-brackets and the mounting pad. Im curious to see how it works out.

We have built several Carden's and they all have the servos for the rudder in the tail. Carden has a very conservative CG location. I just moved my 2 Futaba 9152 servos to the tail on my Yak. Same on Extra. No balance problems. We have stock mufflers in all the planes.

Here is my latest progress. I am happy with the hatch that I put in. I would suggest it on every build. Now the bottom of the fuse is done and I can start working on the inside and the top deck.

How many servos are being used for the elevators? Can I get away with 2 on each half and Rudder in the tail?

Well after two weeks side tracked for our club raffle plane and another ARF for a friend I have gotton some time on the Carden. I preped the cores a little different than the directions. The 1/4 balsa wing root cap was place on the wing before sheeting to make a cleaner joint. The plywood wing bolt blocks were epoxied on the inside of the balsa cap and the foam was cored out so there was a nice fit. The blocks were also drilled and tapped for 1/4 X 20 bolts. After the cap was sanded to the airfoil I made little balsa boxes that fit the servos and those wew place in the wing core in their appropriate places. Then I used a soldiering gun to hollow out wire tubes in the wing cores. Sheeting is next.

I got the stabs sheeted and the wings are setting overnight. My wife used my landscaping bricks for the yard (of all places) this weekend and so I had to improvise on weights for the cores.....

The three stabs are my 40% extra 330, 35% Hurley Extra, and a 33% GP Extra. If you notice I added the stab root mods on all of the stabs. Not gonna have the same thing happen again.....[:'(]
