Bobcat XL is a gyro necessary?
I am getting my Bobcat ready for my first flight and wondering is a gyro a must? Also have any of you flown it without the speed brakes? If so how well does it slow down. Last have anyone tried flaperons on a Bobcat XL before?
Thanks

You don't need a gyro to fly the Bobcat. Takeoffs are arrow straight and in calm wind conditions, the wings will barely rock when the gear are lowered. In breezy conditions with the gear down, the wing rock increases and will require more aileron input to roll into a turn. My speed brakes are attached and I haven't experimented with the suggested flaperon setup yet.

I would not say it is not necessary, the airplane is controllable without the gyro but it sure makes the landings a lot more comfortable. In calm conditions the Bobcat is fine without one, but add a crosswind to the picture and you will be glad you have one on board. I have had the flaperons setup for the last 150 or so flights and they are another essential in my books. kick them up about 3/16-1/4" and the elevator down about the same. It really helps dump lift and slows the airplane down. Without the flaperons the Bobcat is tough to get down into a short field, with them I have flown off as short as a 325' runway. You will love the airplane it's a great flier.

I always enjoy watching you fly your airplanes. I was under the impression that you are 100% in full control of the stick. Now that I know you are using gyro for help, I will close my eyes next time I see you flying. BTW, good pilots fly their airplanes without gyro. (LOL).
.....ghost rider......out.......
(waiting for the incoming!!!!!)

Thanks for the replies, I feel more comfortable knowing now. I plan on doing the first few flights on a dry lake bed so cross winds and runway length are not really a concern. I will try the flaperons and no gyros and check it out.
Thanks

Ghost boy,
Yup now my secret is out of the bag. I use a gyro on my Phantom as well on th eurdder to dampen any dutch roll as well. BTW you still have to fly it the gyro doesn't do ALL the work!

FWIW, DR has a broad shoulder. If he can dish it out, I know he would not mind picking up some incoming every now and then. That is what friends are for !!!! (LMAO).

Sung, FWIW, I test flew my Bcat at Mississippi last year,
without the gyro, flew fine till landing. We had a quartering wind and it was a hairaising event to say the least. After ten flights, I finally got behind the Dutch roll and knocked the flex plates out the nose. Put the gyro in and solved the problem. I set mine at about 75% with the gear down, and 0% with the gear up.
BTW the spoilerons work great. I had it set up at a 1/4" of up ailerons and a 1/4" down elevator mix. Good luck, its a great flying bird. Bill Harris

Yup......scary thought huh! Don't worry though just stand behind me......I NEVER hit myself. Stay clear of the bleachers though, that's the real danger zone!
