Default OMP Giant Scale 35% Edge 540

I need a new cowl for my OMP 35% Giant Scale Edge 540 big bird with a wingspan of approx 103 inches. I have heard that the cowls were manufactured in Canada? Any chance of my finding out who in Canada so I could follow up and find out if that manufacturer would supply one. I am not sure of the CG location, the plans are not available to me, but have heard 5 1/2 inches foreward of the wingtube centerline. I want to move the engine, a 3W106QS, foreward enough to remove 1 1/4 pounds of lead from the firewall, so the plane will balance on the CG.

Those were done by Steve Webber but we too have lost contact with him. You might want to check if a Carden cowling could be made to fit??? I'm sorry but we stopped making those over 4 years ago. On the cg, no way it's 5 1/2 inches in front on the tube. It's more like on the tube or slightly behind. Best thing to do is mark where your cg is now with your current configuration and then repeat that when you move the engine.

Mike, I'll bet if I use the wingtube centerline as the CG point the plane may balance without moving the engine foreward and without that 1 1/2 pounds of lead on the firewall. Thanks for the "Heads Up" ---Rich

Ok, so have you test flown this plane yet at all?

Just one test flight which seemed as if the CG was OK, but then that was 2 to 3 years ago. When I moved the CG to one inch in front of the wing tube the nose dropped to an angle of about 2 degrees which seems perfect and the dry weight dropped to 28 pounds from 30.6 pounds by removing all the lead that I had initially added. It is interesting to note that of 3 aeroworks 540 Edges the CG point is all at 1 inch in front of the wing tube and another OMP 35% Edge was flying 3D with the CG 1 inch behind the CG and the wing tubes were all positioned approx. at 30% of the root wing rib. Weather permitting I want to fly this plane set up as it is now.------------Rich I've got my fingers crossed !

Sounds great. Remember teh cg of any given plane depends on a lot like center of lift and nose and tail lengths, position of the tube in the wing so basically each manufacturer is going to vary somewhat. I like to trim the planes for level flight upright at about 1/2 to 3/4 power and then roll inverted. For IMAC style flying the nose should drop only slightly requiring just a tad of down elevator to maintain. For 3d flying, you want the plane to stay level both upright and inverted.
