14lbs will make the wing loading a bit much. I don't doubt I could fly it... but would it be fun? Plus, it barely fits in my Mini Cooper S even when I go solo. I'm pretty sure I will sell it but lets see what rcpatty says. Maybe I'll have a change of heart!

Guys

I'm sorry to let so much time go by without a response on my Yak54.I havent been able to fly but 2 times since may due to an extremely slammed non stop work schedule with my business and my free time has been minimal. So with that in mind I am just now today-October 31st going out for the maiden on the Yak.Mine came out lighter than most for some reason-Mine tips the scale at just over 10 LBS.I am still a little concerned about handling especially slow speed traits.Wing loading is still a little high even at this weight I feel but we'll see what happens today. It sure is a beautiful plane tho with great glass work & paint. The 2 1/2 Tru turn spinner looks great on it as well

My setup includes:

OS160FX with Brison pitts muffler
Elvator= JR 8550(188 oz of torque)
Rudder= 1/4 scale Futaba 3104(128 oz.)
Ailerons=FMA high torgue metal gears(144 oz each)
1400 mah nicad RX pak mounted in a Strongbox along with my reciever just under the wing tube
Tru turn 2 1/2 aluminum hub spinner
MPI max HD switch(the new one with the RX capacity led lights)

I ditched the stock wheels and am using a set of aluminum wheels -very sharp looking, dont even know where these came from.I got them at some point over the years from the many planes I have had apparently

I chucked all the stock hardware that came with the kit.I used carbon fiber rod with 440 rods for the Elvs.-very solid & strong
I'm using Dubro giant scale horns on Ails & Elvs.
I'm using a Sullivan giant scale pull/pull setup on my Rudder

Well I'm off to the field now to take her up.We'll see what happens.I will post the results & some pics tonight afterwards [8D]

Regards,Steve

Well we did take to the air today with the Yak BUT the plane was tail heavy and resulted in a quick attempt to get her back down safely.Did manage to get her back down with very little damage(thank god) -Moreless the only damage was a busted out landing gear block (clean break) & some minor cracking on the bottom of the fuse to just the paint and one former knocked loose. No biggie luckily-can be fixed in 30 minutes of work .My only complaint on this Yak is that the instructions are lame & you have to convert mm's to inches .Well I was off in my conversion as it so turns out-dohhh [X(]I was Lucky and will be able to fix that problem & try again next weekend .I can tell that this Yak will be a GREAT flying aerobatic & a keeper cause even with it's tailheavy state today it still wanted to recover everytime.Hence the reason it faired ok with litttle damage .We were all amazed at this ,most any other plane out there wouldnt have done that in these conditions. The OS160 FX is a POWERHOUSE in this thing & sounded outstanding!! This plane will be able to do anything in the book at half power with this engine setup it appears.I cant wait to wring it out next weekend & see what shes got to offer

For now here are some pics of her from today-these were taken after the inflicted damage from the tailheavy condition.Looks good & cant even tell it was bruised from the ill fated maiden

I just got mine and intend to put a Super Tiger 2300 in it. I know it is a picky engine but I can handle that without a problem. Does anyone have there throws for the control surfaces that I can get?? The instructions do not say anything.
thanks

Hi Chaps,

Have any of you (those who have flown this bird) had any problems with a dead stick landing?

I was just wondering as my mate flew his for the second time on Sunday (windspeed about 6 - 8 mph) and his OS Gemini 1.60 died a couple of minutes into the flight. He was going up wind at about 100ft altitude. The plane seemed pretty uncontrollable once the engine died and it was tip-stalling all over the show. He managed to straighten it up but it pancaked into the tarmac snapping off one u/c leg. He'd already reinforced the U/C block after the gear tore out after a dead stick on its maiden.

He definately needs to get the engine sorted before the next flight though.

It was a shame because it's a gorgeous looking plane. All up weight was 12.5 lbs.

Pete

There is not much wing (806 sq in) for a fair bit of weight.

If your CG is slightly rearward you will find that it is very twitchy with the power off. Even with the CG spot on, get it to the ground quickly when the poweer dies.

Cheers

Phil

Thanks for the advice Phil, we'll try shifting the CG a bit more forward (MORE lead), but must get that engine reliable first..........

Finally finished mine and boy is it heavy. I had to add 2 lbs of nose weight for it to balance out on the regular flying cg. My weight came to 15 1/2 pounds with the added weight. I have a super tigre 2300 engine. I do not know if I will even fly this. I was gonna mount the servos in the tail but now I am glad I didn't, that just would have been more tail weight. Anyway, this one is for sale with the engine. for $350 if anyone is interested let me know. Thanks

Too heavy, will tip stall at the drop of a hat, poor quality fibreglass landing gear, flimsy light fibreglass job on fuselage. Was powered by an OS1.60FX which just flew it...
14lb dead weight. Needed 500grammes lead up front to balance. I decided to strip the hardware and re kit to new specifications.

Yep, crashed it on a dead stick with nowhere to land. My fault. Too badly damaged to repair. The quality of the fibreglassing of the fuselage in very poor.

Sure did. After my post mortem and stripping of all the hardware. Not one part was salvagable. They are one of those planes with a limited window of opportunity for survival. Mine missed that window. Oh well, you win some you loose some.
