Default Rascal Forty posing outdoors.

I have been working on my Rascal for a few weeks now. Yeah I know, it's an ARF and should be built in 4 hours or something. Well, I like to take my time.

Some of the 'extras' I have done to it include pin striping around the blue panels; making an instrument panel; cockpit side panels; painting the interior; and a raised floor for a pilot bust. I rounded the leading edges of the landing gear, and painted it to match the Oracover. I installed an Excel fueling system from Slimline. I made an on-board glow plug heater that uses a c-cell and is activated by a throttle microswitch. It's about 90% complete but I couldn't wait to take some pics outside in my backyard.

Very nice! The pilot is a great touch. I'll be waiting for the flight report. My son is convinced he needs a Rascal.

The Rascal is a great flying plane. I am about 18 planes into this hobby now. Everything from a 1/4 scale Sig Cub to a Ultrastick 60 to the new Hanger Nine AT6 and I keep coming back to my Rascal. If I had to knock anything about the plane it would be the method that Sig chose for installing the engine. It would have been much simpler with a flat firewall and a cowl. I have flown my Rascal off of the water, off of snow and off the mine field we call our club field and it handled everything very well. It flys great on a 52 four stroke. There is no need for any more. Good luck with yours.

My son is 10 and is perfecting his take-offs. He is close to ready for landings. (scares me) I talked him out of the Rascal for a first plane. He's building a Goldberg Falcon 56. He's still drooling over the red Rascal 40 for a second plane.

David,

The Rascal Forty is a great plane, and if he's doing well with a normal trainer, he should be able to fly the Rascal no problem. The deal is that he probably needs some tailwheel time before he can safely takeoff with the Rascal. Mine has a real strong left turning tendency on takeoff, but it is easily corrected with a small amount of right rudder.

Depending upon what trainer he's learning on, the Rascal will probably be easier to fly in the air. It's a gentle plane at half throttle and reccommended rates. I love mine, and I've been flying R/C for over ten years now. It's quickly becoming my favorite plane of all time for relaxing flying.

I've been flying my Rascal for a while now and I love it. With a Saito .56 it just putters along.

How has it been customized? (other than being red)

The other day I was thermaling my rascal 40! Throttle at idle, turning nice a slow. Following a few buzzards to their thermals...what a blast!

Due to damage received on the ground in high winds, I had to repair both wingtips. I decided to just clip them instead of trying to duplicate them. [8D]

I loved my Rascal; wish I never sold it. I flew it with an OS 48 Surpass for a long time, then I put in a Magnum 52FS for power. I had to put an onboard glow driver with the 48 to get the idle down low enough to make a good landing. I had to force it down before, or cut to idle when I was about 25 sec out.

Maybe I should buy another.

Hey Salty, who's the good looking kid with the Rascal?

I have a glow driver in mine, built it in when I assembled the plane. It is switched on at mid to low throttle. (Picture shows switch and cam) My engine will not keep a reliable low idle without it. But with it the idle is great. I also love the fact I can flick the toggle switch to arm it, and then just flip the prop to start it without having to attach a glow driver. I still get a kick out of that!

I think you should buy another.

The remote glow is nice, kinda wish I had put one on mine, just for starting, so I didn't have to reach up under it. It's my favorite "windy day plane"; I'll come in upwind with the throttle back just enough to match the windspeed, and "hover" it to a landing.
The pinstriping really brings out the appearance, I did similar things with mine; I have the blue one, and added red stripes to the wing and tail, put stars in the blue areas.

Hey Salty, why not try the 110 size next time? I got to fly one a while back; it is easier to fly than the 40 size, I think. The guy who owned it had a G-26 in it, could hover it (vertical), do rolling circles, and could bring it in to a horizontal hovered landing in a breeze. Honestly, the 110 with the Zenoah flew like the 40 with a .56 Saito, except his vertical performance was better.

I have thought about buying another one many times. Especially the 120 size Rascal.

When I was in San Diego a guy at my old field had a 120 Rascal. I remember he had a heck of time with that thing, was more the motor and not the plane.

I sold it when I was going to get rid of all my smaller 40 size planes and go larger. Well, I bought a few larger ones but still have a few of the 40s sitting here.

I do have an OS 120AX sitting in the garage doing nothing. Wife is asking for my list. But I put a 40cc gas engine on there for a plane I have in build. Maybe if I do the dishes a bit Santa will think I've been EXTRA nice and bring me two big gifts.
