I recently purchased an engine as part of a package deal along with some planes and other rc stuff. This 20 cc sized engine was at the bottom of a box. Can anyone identify the make and model of this engine? It appears to be a glow engine with Walbro gas carb and gas type muffler.(no pressure fitting for a glow tank) Also, there are no names or markings anywhere...only some numbers on the side and mount plate. Could this engine possibly use this carb with glow fuel? Or gas? I'm puzzled. No elect. ign. batteries or magneto wheel either which leads me to believe it's glow. Would love to use it in one of my planes. Thanks to anyone who can help.

if that engine has ball bearings you could run a gas glow mix. how much does it weigh?
go to the engine conversions forum and search for the thread titled gas fuel with glowplug no ignition. its a long read, but has tons of good info for running with this setup

Ball bearings on the crank, rollers on both ends of the con rod, 2 lbs 4 oz without the prop bolt and washer....

It does resemble a Tartan, same firewall engine mount, anyway. I guess I'll find out about the ball bearings when I break down to clean it. I will try to weigh it very soon. Wondering how old this is, too.

andrew66 ----check ebay right now. I googled this engine and there's one on the block....current bid $14. Seller says it's a 22 cc glow engine w/muffler. Looks almost like mine. To find...google Tartan glow engine. Good luck.

Believe me you don't want one of these. There is a reason that you don't see many about - ???

If you want glow get the Laser 150 / Saito 125 / OS 120

If you want gas get the MVVS 160 / Evolution 25 / Roto 25 / 3W 24

But don't get the Tartan

They're apparantly not popular, but are available. They stress to use low oil content on these. I was told to get a gallon of 10% Nitro of my choice with 18% oil and add a gallon of pure methanol / alcohol to reduce oil by half. Suppose to spit oil all over the place if you don't. It just does not need that much oil to run.

What is the model number of the carb? WT xxx or WA xxx etc? Those glow walbros are hard to come by. Since it has needle bearings on the you can run less oil or EI.

I know a couple of lab techs that were very competent modelers. This was over a decade ago. These two guys started out with the gas versions and had no problems. Then they switched to glow with all World Engines parts, so that their engines were identical to the World Engines glow versions. That is when the "fun" began.

Being lab techs, these gentlemen were meticulous in following the glow versions instructions. They were going through new ball bearings and other engine internals at a high rate. The ball bearings would fail and then the fun would begin, time after time. They weren't even that powerful on glow fuel (cut with a gallon of methanol, as per WE instructions).

I test flew both a Byron 1/3rd scale Pitts and a Christen Eagle with the gasoline fueled Tartan Twin (1984 or thereabouts). No problems whatsoever. A sweet running engine, but a dog by today's standards, power wise. Still a very nice engine for sport flying.

On the base mount is stamped 07-08-01 and on the side of the engine is stamped 07-01-17. I'll check the Walbro carb out and post number later today. It's not with me now. Whatever it is, I'm gonna clean it up and use it. Now, question is: on what??

Ed, what are you hinting at? Should I convert this to gasoline to avoid any glow fuel problems I may have? Most of my planes are gas anyway.
Problem factor with gas: 0% I trust them much more than glow.

A glow Walbro is only a few mouse clicks away..Walbro WT499, gas OR glow with no mods...Works great on a G26...
A Sig Rascal 110 or Ultra Stik Lite would be a good match...

Dave, I could not find any numbers on the carberator unless they're stamped on the inside somewhere, I have yet to take it apart to clean. It did say Singapor on it, though.

there is a Tartan,, and there is a Super Tartan,, both are 22cc,,

the motor above in the photos is a Tartan,, "not a Super Tartan",, I know cause I have a Super Tartan, the Super has taller cooling fins on the head, with the taller fins you can NOT see the glow plug from the sides on the Super,, the Super has 1 extra transfer port inside..

Okay, it's a Tartan. Any advice as to convert it to gas or keep it as a glow engine? Is it worth the expense to send it off and have that done? I'd like it to be reliable.

The Tartans that were fragging themselves on glow fuel were twins. I don't know if the single cylinder models experienced the same type of failures as the twins that these two fellows owned and operated.

Another friend flies his 1.34 (like yours) on glow and he has never remarked about a failure. I meant to include this in the first response, but forgot. Sorry.

There is a guy down in Florida that can realy make a sweet engine by re-doing some things on the Tartan engines. His first name is Tom...thats all I know! Capt,n P.S. The engines may be made in Italy
